During her two-year career as a member of the women’s tennis team at Suffolk University, Heather (Orkney) Swann could best be described in one word:  perfect.

A transfer student, Swann was a dominating force throughout her junior and senior seasons, posting an incredible 24-0 singles record within that span.  Blessed with a powerful, cross-court forehand that was virtually impossible to hit, the tall (5-9) and athletic righty was no match for any opponent.

While her preference was singles, Swann also enjoyed the camaraderie of playing doubles.  Her strong serve was a blur for opposing individuals and her accuracy was right on target every time she stepped on the court.  She was like a magician, performing her wizardry with a tennis racquet instead of a wand.

Swann’s overall talented play and leadership skills helped her team qualify for the Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) tournament both years, even though Suffolk’s post-season match in her senior season was cancelled due to snow.

Possessed with many favorable qualities, Swann’s work ethic was second to none.  She never missed a match and doesn’t recall ever missing a practice.  Determined to become the best that she could be, she spent her off-season practicing with the Suffolk men’s tennis team.

“I was able to keep up with them,” she says.  She then added that she has great memories of her playing days and is still in contact with many of her former teammates.

As a senior, Swann was co-recipient (along with women’s basketball star Kate Librandi) of the coveted Charles Law Outstanding Student Athlete Award, a tribute to her athletic and academic prowess.  Upon graduation, she spent one year as an assistant coach of the women’s tennis team under head coach Seth Joyal.

Swann, currently a partner with the law firm of Hay & Swann PLLC, lives in Tacoma, Washington with her husband, Jeremy Swann, and their two daughters – Braylin (3 ½) and Boston (2 and named after the city).  She very much looks forward to getting back on the court with her girls someday soon.
