Year: 2015
Team: Women's Basketball

Balanced offense.  Suffocating defense.  The will to win.

Those are some of the key factors that triggered the 2007-08 Suffolk University women’s basketball team to one of the most successful and memorable season’s in school history.

Following a 4-4 start to open the year, the Rams went 16-5 the rest of the way, finishing with an overall record of 20-9, 11-2 in the Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC).

At the time, it was the most wins ever recorded by a Suffolk men’s or women’s basketball team.  The local quintet made it to the conference championship game and qualified for the ECAC tournament.

A total of eight players averaged between six and ten points per game that season, with seniorMeghan Tracey, a 6-0 junior center, and Katie Castignetti, a 5-9 senior point guard, leading the way.  Castignetti was unique in that she was a floor general strong enough to play power forward on defense.

Suffolk’s full-court, pressing style created more turnovers (706) than a North End bakery.  The dynamic duo of senior guards Stephanie Morrissey and Kaitlyn Klecha were responsible for igniting the tenacious, in-your-face brand of ball, sticking to their opponents like Velcro the entire 94 feet.  They were the engine that made the blue and gold machine go, holding opponents to a stingy 53.6 points per game.

“Stephanie Morrissey is the best athlete I’ve ever coached and Kaitlyn Klecha is not far behind,” said head coach Ed Leyden, who has masterfully patrolled the sidelines at Suffolk for the past 21 years.

The team’s signature win that season was a 66-55 home victory against conference powerhouse Emmanuel.  In fact, it was the first time that the Rams ever defeated Emmanuel (also halting their 24-game conference winning streak) since the GNAC was formed in 1996.  In addition to scoring 15 points in the game, freshman point guard Christie Iwanicki also predicted the victory.
