Joe Walsh has been passionate about “America’s Pastime” his entire life. His “Field of Dreams” is any ballpark from Boston to Bel Air, friendly confines where he is most comfortable leading and inspiring others to reach their full potential.

When he became head baseball coach at Suffolk University in 1982, the team had not posted a winning season in some time. However, over the next 14 years with Walsh at the helm, the Rams compiled a 218–167–1 record, including nine winning campaigns. He also had several of his players named to various college allstar teams and participate in the annual all-star game at Fenway Park.

In 1995, Walsh led Suffolk to a 26–11 record and the final round of the ECAC tournament. For his efforts, he was named Northeast Regional and New England Division III Coach of the Year.

His teams also qualified for the ECAC tournament in other seasons, his 1984 squad the first in school history to achieve this accomplishment.

Walsh was a tireless recruiter, spending countless hours working the phones and visiting local high school and junior college games for players whom he could develop. Due to Suffolk’s lack of facilities, his sales pitch had to be as perfect as astrike down the middle of the plate.

His coaching style was firm but fair, and he instilled a sense of pride and confidence in his teams that allowed them to overachieve. He bled Suffolk blue and gold and it rubbed off on his players. During his undergraduate years, Walsh was a three-sport athlete (baseball, basketball, and cross country) at Suffolk.

In addition to his role as head coach of the baseball team, he also was head coach of the women’s basketball and cross-country squads, and director of the intramural sports program.

After Suffolk, Walsh moved on to Harvard University in 1996 to become the head baseball coach for the Crimson.
