It was one of those nights when Jack Resnick, as they say in the sporting world, was “in a zone.” On that memorable evening in 1953, Resnick, a 5-foot-9-inch guard, scored an incredible 75 points in Suffolk University’s 107–71 victory against Burdett College at the West End House—now administrative offices for nurses at Massachusetts General Hospital.

It was the most points scored by a Suffolk player in the 63-year history of the men’s basketball program.  Resnick reached his 75-point performance by connecting on 31 field goals (there was no three-point line back then) and 13 free throws. He also pulled down 32 rebounds. In his next game, Resnick, despite being the center of media attention and double- and triple-teamed, continued his hot shooting streak,  scoring 56 points (missing just one shot) against Merrimack College. His magical touch was so powerful that he felt like every shot he took was going in.

Resnick averaged more than 21 points per game for the Rams throughout his four-year career. His phenomenal scoring ability thrilled audiences both home and away. He was Suffolk’s version of basketball legend Pistol Pete Maravich— without the floppy hair and droopy socks. During his 20s, Resnick played a little semi-professional basketball. He also demonstrated his roundball talents at various charity events, taking hundreds of foul shots (and making most of them) in a short time.

His legacy of scoring 75 points in one game will remain forever. And, ironically, getting inducted into the Suffolk University Athletic Hall of Fame couldn’t happen at a more appropriate time. Jack Resnick is 75 years young.
