Moy Made Charles Melanson Unsung Hero

BOSTON – Stephanie Moy of the Suffolk women's hockey team has been named the 2020-21 Charles Melanson Unsung Hero, Director of Athletics Cary McConnell announced Wednesday afternoon.

Given annually in honor of the late Charles Melanson, who volunteered countless hours to the Athletic Department as a team manager, the award is presented to a student-athlete whose contribution to the Athletic Department exemplifies the attributes of an unsung hero; a selfless individual, who is often uncredited.

"There is no one more deserving of this award than Steph," women's hockey head coach Taylor Wasylk said. "On the ice she leads by example and works in a quiet manner that may go unnoticed to some, but that has an incredibly positive impact on our team. Off the ice she volunteers countless hours to community service and has established herself as a strong voice in the fight for social justice. We are incredibly proud of the person that she is becoming and cannot wait to see what the future has in store for her."

Moy is the first student-athlete to of the women's hockey program, which is in its three-year of existence, to be honored with a Suffolk University Athletics departmental award.

Moy, a junior from Burnaby, British Columbia, has been a staple on the blue line since the Rams' inaugural season in 2018-19, skating in all 62 games. The defenseman has assembled a 13-point stat line divided into six goals, including two on the powerplay, with seven handouts.

Away from the ice, Moy became an advocate for social justice. She spent July 2020 baking donuts and selling them in the Burnaby and New Westminster area with the proceeds going to the Equal Justice Initiative and the Black Youth Helpline of Canada. For her efforts last summer, she was tabbed CCC Person of the Week Oct. 5.

Academically, the psychology major has built a cumulative 3.626 grade point average, earning NEHC All-Academic Team acknowledgement as a sophomore in 2019-20. In addition, she was a member of Suffolk's 4.0 Club in the Fall of 2020 and is a six-time AD Honor Roll selection.
