Rams Rewind: Baseball No Hitters April 7, 2012 & 2019

BOSTON – Ram Nation now has the chance to get a glimpse into Suffolk Athletics history though clippings and pictures from the Rams’ record books and archives.

Suffolk baseball pitchers seem to like April 7. The last blue-and-gold hurler to toss a no-no was Worth Walrod April 7, 2019, seven years to the day of the previous no-hitter thrown by Jhonneris Mendez14.

In 2012, Mendez marked his place in the Rams’ record book with a no-hitter of his own. In the nightcap of a GNAC double feature against Lasell, a 3-0 shutout, the righthander retired the first 20 hitters. One pitch away from a perfect game with two outs and a full-count the throw was a touch off the mark zone to give up a base on balls to future Rams’ Assistant Coach Billy Uberti (2018). That pitch elimination perfection, however, Mendez punched out the next batter for the final out, one of his 10 in the game in seven innings of work, to preserve the no-no. He needed just 97 pitches for the complete-game effort.

Walrod's no-no was eerily familiar to the one Mendez threw down the same exact amount of strikeouts for the pitchers. The southpaw was near perfect on the mound at East Boston Memorial Park to help Suffolk lift the lid on its GNAC doubleheader against Anna Maria with a 5-0 shutout. The then-senior allowed just four base runners over seven innings, on three on walks and one on a hit-by-pitch, and matched a personal-best 10 strikeouts in the complete-game effort.
