BOSTON, MA - Suffolk University (8-4, 2-0 GNAC) defeated
visiting Saint Joseph's (7-8, 0-2) on Thursday evening in a GNAC
contest, 75-48. Meghan Daigle '10
(Grantham, MA) made all 12 of her free-throw attempts and scored a
team-high 20 points in the losing effort. Suffolk's Julianne Conrad
‘12 (West Bridgewater, MA) tallied a double-double with 23
points and 12 rebounds, both game-highs.
Lady Monks guard Carolyn Freeman
‘10 (Scarborough, ME/McAuley) enjoyed a solid night as well,
with 17 points off a four of five effort from three-point
range.
The first half was a seesaw battle, as the lead changed hands three
times and the contest was tied on six occasions.
St. Joe's jumped out to an early advantage, and led 7-0 after
Freeman drained her first trey of the game 2:44
into the contest, but the Rams posted a 10-0 run to gain the lead
with 14:09 to play in the opening half.
In the following six minutes, St. Joe's mounted an 11-5 surge to
retake the lead, 18-15. Daigle scored eight
straight points for the Lady Monks and Freeman
connected on a three-pointer at the 7:39 mark to provide her team
with a three point cushion.
For the next five minutes, Suffolk maintained a slim lead of no
more than five points. With 2:28 to play in the half, Suffolk guard
Emily Duquette ‘09 (Harrisville, RI) converted a three-point
play to lift her team to a 35-27 advantage and the Rams took an
eight-point edge, 39-31, into intermission.
St. Joe's cut the Suffolk lead to 44-39 after Freeman hit a freebie
to finish off a three point play with 16:01 left in the contest.
But the Rams, who shot 53.8% (14-26) in the second stanza,
outscored the Lady Monks by a 27-3 margin in the next 10 minutes of
play en route to securing a 75-48 conference win.
Bolstered by Daigle's performance from the charity
stripe, St. Joe's went 20-22 on freebies but couldn't get the shots
from the field to fall. The Lady Monks shot 22.6% (12-53) from the
floor in the game and, to make matters worse, were outrebounded
50-27. The Rams grabbed 36 defensive caroms, against eight
offensive boards by the Royal Blue, in the contest.
For Saint Joseph's, Daigle contributed on the
defensive end with five steals, Casey
Drake ‘11 (Lebanon, NH) dealt four assists
and Kayla Nowell ‘11
(Bridgton, ME) was 3-4 from the charity stripe and pilfered three
loose balls in the loss.
For Suffolk, Kerry Bowman ‘09 (Guilford, CT) scored 19 points
and Meghan Tracey ‘09 (Rehoboth, MA) posted a double-double
with 11 points and 11 rebounds.
Saint Joseph's will travel to Mount Ida on Saturday, January 17th
to take on the Mustangs in a conference contest that is slated to
begin at 1:00 PM. The Rams travel to New Hampshire Saturday
afternoon when they take on Rivier at 3:00 PM.
