BOSTON – Suffolk volleyball heads to Weston, Massachusetts, Saturday, Sept. 9 for its first true tri-match of 2023. The Rams will first take on the host Regis at 11 a.m., before faces UMass Dartmouth at 1 p.m.

LAST TIME OUT
Suffolk volleyball slipped in its first match at Larry E. and Michael S. Smith of the 2023 season as the nationally ranked Engineers of No. 10 MIT downed the Rams in sweeping fashion. The 3-0 setback came via set scores 25-16, 25-18 and 25-14.

RAMS RUNDOWN
Suffolk (1-4) looks to snap a three-match skid Saturday and capture its first win since a sweep of Trine at the Great Lakes Cross Over Sept. 1.  

McKenna Keowen's 2.25 kills per set lead the Rams' attack that is set up by Jayla Martinez (3.65) and Aislinn Lanigan (2.76).  

Keowen is also a threat at the service line with 0.63 aces per set. Morgan Kelsey is a close second on the squad with 0.53 aces per set. That twosome anchor the defensive unit. Kelsey owns a team-best 3.65 digs per set with Keowen's 3.13 digs per set coming in second.  

PRIDE POINTS
Regis sits 2-3 on the season after falling to WPI (3-2) and Plymouth State (3-0) in back-to-back matches this week.  

The Pride's 9.70 kills per set offense sees one player average over 2.00 kills per set in Kamdyn Tenorio with 2.70 kps to her credit. Avery Mola and Rita Dow are on the verge of producing 2.00 kills per set as well with 1.90 kps and 1.80 kps, respectively. Ahnasia Mckinney has held down the setter role with 7.30 assists per set.  

Emily Hart's 4.22 digs per set leads the defense. Tenorio supplies 3.35 digs per set to the defense that receives 0.72 blocks per set from Lauren Tuttle. 

INSIDE THE SERIES

  • The Suffolk, Regis series dates back to 1997. 
  • The series leveled at 8-8 in 2021 when the Pride defeat the Rams, 3-0, in Boston. 
  • Suffolk looks for its first win over the Pride since a 3-1 decision Oct. 23, 2019. 
  • The blue-and-gold is 2-1 versus Regis under Scott Blanchard's guidance.

CORSAIRS CATCHUP
UMass Dartmouth holds a 2-2 ledger with wins over Wellesley (3-0) and most recently Elms (3-1) Tuesday, Sept. 5.  

Kate Wood produces 3.00 kps to pace the Corsairs' 10.63 kps offense. Devon Laing (2.43 kps) and Allison Pate (2.00 kps) provide over 2.00 kps to the attack, that is set up by Skye Peters' 6.93 assists per set.

Emily Pogorelec leads the defense with 4.88 digs per set. Maggie Sullivan adds 0.53 blocks per set to the defense that receives 2.53 digs per set from Kate Wade. 

INSIDE THE SERIES

  • Since 2003, Suffolk is 4-11 all-time versus UMass Dartmouth. 
  • The Rams picked up back-to-back wins to start the series, then lost seven straight before winning its third match in 2013. 
  • Suffolk's fourth win over the Corsairs came in 2019 when the Rams took a five-set thriller Oct. 19 in Keene, New Hampshire. 
  • Suffolk is the most successful when taking Dartmouth to four sets, holding a 2-2 record in such matches. 
  • In sweeps, the Rams have one win compared to UMass' seven. 
  • Dartmouth holds a pair of five-set decisions, while one of Suffolk's wins came a 3-2 decision, including the rivals last meeting in 2019. 
  • The Rams are unbeaten, 1-0, against UMD with Scott Blanchard on the sidelines.

The tri-match jump starts a four-match road swing that features pit stops at Fitchburg State and Dean Tuesday, Sept. 12 and Thursday, Sept. 14, respectively. Both road tilts have 6 p.m. first serves.
