Volleyball Closes Home Schedule with Sweep of Curry

BOSTON – Suffolk volleyball put an exclamation point on its home regular-season slate as the Rams swept Curry Wednesday night at Larry E. and Michael S. Smith Court. The Commonwealth Coast Conference (CCC) victory came by set scores 25-10, 25-21 and 25-22.

SET ONE RECAP (25-10, SUFFOLK)

  • Suffolk grabbed a 10-3 lead to open things up. That stretch featured four aces including a pair to open the match by Harmony Johnson
  • Jayla Martinez served a two more aces out of a Colonels timeout to help the Rams make it double-digit distance, 14-4. 
  • That advantage did not get smaller than eight the rest of the way and Suffolk scored the final four points to put the set away. 

SET TWO RECAP (25-21, SUFFOLK)

  • Things flipped in Curry's favor to open the second set as the Colonels were in front 7-2. 
  • Suffolk slowly pulled back and three aces in a row from Morgan Kelsey not only leveled the playing field, but gave the blue-and-gold the edge, 14-13. 
  • Thanks to that momentum, the Rams gained a three-point gap, 17-14, which forced the visitors into a timeout. 
  • The break helped the Colonels as the came back to even the score at 20-all. 
  • The Rams rattled off a 5-1 stretch to seal the frame in their favor.  

SET THREE RECAP (25-22, SUFFOLK)

  • Each team traded three to start. Suffolk scored first with the Colonels responding. 
  • The Rams managed to couple points together, which helped build an 11-6 lead. 
  • Curry clawed back with a 7-1 spurt to go in front, 13-12. 
  • That rally continued out of a Rams timeout and Suffolk found itself down four, 17-13. 
  • Suffolk responded with four points in a row capped off by a pair of aces from Kelsey, her fourth and fifth of the night, to equalize matters at 17. 
  • The game of runs continued out of a Colonels' timeout with Suffolk scoring three consecutive points to go up 20-17. 
  • Curry retaliated with five straight points to put the Rams in a 22-20 hole.  
  • Scott Blanchard used a timeout to calm his team down and the huddle helped as Suffolk the final five points of the frame to take the match.  

STATISTICALLY SPEAKING

  • McKenna Keowen was on the verge of a double-double with a match-best 15 kills to go along with nine digs. 
  • Jasmine James registered nine kills. 
  • Alina Nowakowski provided seven kills on a .700 attack rate with three blocks. 
  • Johnson held down the setter role with 27 handouts. The junior added five aces, five digs and one assist and block, respectively. 
  • Kelsey served five aces, while Martinez provided three. 

NOTEWORTHY

  • Suffolk won its second straight match against Curry to move to 6-3 against the Colonels since 2010. 
  • In Boston, Suffolk is now 4-1 versus the Colonels. 
  • Suffolk is unbeaten, 2-0, against Curry under Blanchard's guidance. 
  • The Rams swept the Colonels for the third time, second straight meeting.
