Women’s Basketball’s Streak Ends at UNE, 69-61

BIDDEFORD, Maine – A sluggish start to the fourth quarter cost the Rams a crucial Commonwealth Coast Conference setback as Suffolk women's basketball team fell to the University of New England, 69-61, Wednesday night at Harold Alfond Forum. The Nor'Easters outscored the blue-and-gold 18-13 in the final 10 minutes to end Suffolk's seven-game win streak.

RECORDS: Suffolk (18-6, 11-4 CCC) | University of New England (18-6, 13-3 CCC)

HOW IT HAPPENED
The sixth lead change of the day ladned in Suffolk's favor when Aisling Crowley scored. That layup sparked a 9-0 Rams run that gave the blue-and-gold a 14-6 lead. UNE ended a near four-minute scoring draught with 19 seconds left in the opening quarter to trim the gap to six, 14-8.

The Nor'Easters outscored the Rams 10-4 in the first four minutes of the second stanza to level the playing field at 18-all.

The lead would change nine times after that with the last coming in UNE's favor, 33-32, with 34 seconds to go before halftime. Suffolk had three changes to put a hoop away and take the advantage into half, but all attempts were off the mark and the Rams trailed by one at the intermission.

A one-possession game hung around throughout the third frame with things evening tying, with the last at the 3:25 mark at 44-44.

From there, the Nor'Easters went on a 7-2 stretch to put the Rams in a five-point hole, 51-46, with 1:29 remaining in the third. An Amanda DeAngelis hoop with just over a minute remaining trimmed the distance back to three and neither team scored over the final minute to send Suffolk into the fourth down 51-48.

Five scoreless minutes by the Rams allowed UNE to take a nine-point advantage, 57-48.

Suffolk managed to get the margin down to five, 65-60, when DeAngelis converted a traditional 3-point play with 27 seconds on the clock. Time was on the Nor'Easters side, and they took advantage of their two trips to the free throw line to seal the blue-and-gold's 69-61 setback.
