Women’s Basketball Wins Boston Battle, Defeats Emerson, 83-64

BOSTON – Five different Rams produced career-highs in points scored as Suffolk women's basketball won the battle for Boston Commons, defeated Emerson, 83-64, at Brown & Plofker Gymnasium Thursday night.

HOW IT HAPPENED
It took a while for Suffolk's scoring to get going. The first Rams hoop came 2:08 into the action and the next three hoops from the blue-and-gold were spaced out by at least two minutes to keep things close early on.  

Down 9-5, the Rams started find their grove on the offensive end and back-to-back hoops from Katie Kirsch and Aisling Crowley helped level the playing field at 9-all. The score would even twice more with the lead switching twice with Suffolk ending the opening 10 minutes in front, 15-13. 

Suffolk held onto a 23-22 edge and once against Kirsh stepped up to ignited a Rams rally. This time the captain ignited 7-0 run that gave the visitors an eight-point, 30-22, cushion with 4:40 to go before halftime.  

The Rams continued to stretch the gap and made it double digits on multiple occasions, but a free throw by Ella Bushee for the Lions sliced the margin back to nine points, 41-32, when the teams headed to the locker rooms. 

Suffolk's momentum from the second stanza carried into the third as it built a 15-point advantage, 51-36. 

Emerson attempted to comeback and cut the Rams lead down to eight, 53-45, with 3:28 left in the quarter. 

The back-and-forth affair continued as Suffolk surged ahead once again. This time it used an 8-0 spurt, that featured five points from Colby Guinta and a triple from Maddie Stewart, to take 61-45 lead at the 1:49 mark. 

Over the final two minutes of the third quarter, Emerson managed to pull back within 10, 62-52, to keep things interesting.  

The Lions kept the Rams on their toes for the first few minutes of the final frame. Stewart sunk a lay-up out of a Rams timeout to jump start a 13-2 Suffolk run that not only restored a double figure lead, but pushed it to nearly 20 to put the game out of reach for Emerson.  

STATISTICALLY SPEAKING

  • Guinta produced a game-high 20 points on a 7-for-12 showing from the floor with a 5-for-6 effort from the free throw line to go along with nine rebounds and two assists. 
  • Stewart was on the verge of a 20-point night as the sophomore supplied 19 points on a 6-for-8 performance from the field and an identical effort on the charity stripe. She added three caroms, two helpers and one takeaway. 
  • Amanda DeAngelis provided 12 points, eight boards, three steals and one swat. 
  • Kirsh had 10 points, seven rebounds, two takeaways and two swats. 
  • Suffolk shot a season-best 50.8 percent (33-65) from the floor, 30.0 percent from 3-point land and 73.7 percent (14-19) from the line. 
  • Emerson had three players in double figures in Ella Bushee (17), Devin Hill (10) and Chelsea Gibbons (10). 
  • The Rams won the battle on the boards, 39-17. 
  • Suffolk turned Emerson's 22 turnovers into 29 points. 
  • The Rams took advantage of their offensive rebounds with 16 second-chance points. 
  • Over half of Suffolk's 83 points came inside the paint with 42 points coming in the key. 

NOTEWORTHY

  • Suffolk defeated Emerson in back-to-back meetings. 
  • The Rams moved to 28-6 all-time against the Lions. 
  • At Emerson, Suffolk improved to 13-3. 
  • The Rams played at the Lions home court for the first time since Nov. 12, 2018. 
  • Suffolk boasts a 20-5 record versus Emerson under Ed Leyden's guidance. 
  • Guinta has sunk a trey in every contest of her collegiate career. The freshman has put away a long ball in all three contests this year. 
  • Guinta logged a career-high in points (20), field goals made (7), rebounds (9), matched a personal-best in helpers (2) and made the first free throws of her collegiate career. 
  • Arlenis Veloz dished out a career-high three dimes. 
  • Stewart rewrote her personal-best in points (19), field goals made (6), free throws made (6) and tied a career-high one steal. 
  • Kirsch notched a career-best in points (10), five goals made (5) and blocks (2). 
  • Mia Fantauzzi pitched in a career-high four assists and had the first takeaways of her collegiate career. 
  • Ellie Moffat had a career-high in rebounds (2) and dished out the first dime of her collegiate career. 
  • Madi Mahoney tied a personal-best in points with seven and set a career-high in field goals made (3) and assists (3). 
  • Colby Casey provided a career-high in points (4), field goals made (2), rebounds (2) and assists (1). 
  • Kendall Jacques logged the first points of her collegiate career.
