BOSTON – Suffolk softball scored first, but could not hold onto the lead as UMass Boston put up five unanswered to hand the Rams a 5-2 game two setback in a non-conference double feature Wednesday afternoon at the UMB Softball Field.
THE BASICS
SCORE: Suffolk 2 | UMass Boston 5
RECORDS: Suffolk (7-9) | UMass Boston (14-2)
HOW IT HAPPENED
Suffolk struck in the fifth thanks to extra base hits and a Beacons' error. Lily Gustafson singled to get the inning going and swiped second just in time for Julia Mills to knock a two-bagger to right field. An error on the play allowed Mills to take third, but she didn't need to as Ella Turnbull barreled a double of her own to plate Mills and give the blue-and-gold a 2-0 cushion.
UMass Boston leveled the playing field in the home half of the inning when Bri Melchionda brought in two runs on a base hit to center. The Beacons kept up their offensive output in the fifth with two more runs on a sac fly from Lauryn Bethea and a single by Hayley Krockta to put Suffolk in a 4-2 hole.
The Beacons added another run in the bottom of the sixth to pad their advantage to three, 5-2.
Mills made it into scoring position in the top of the seventh behind from UMB's third baseman Lauren Miner and a passed ball. The Ram would be stranded there and the Beacons would lock up the nightcap win to secure the non-conference sweep of Suffolk.
