Keowen Repeats as CCC Rookie of the Week, Sets Volleyball’s Weekly Award Record

BIDDEFORD, Maine – McKenna Keowen of the Suffolk volleyball team received her fifth weekly recognition from the Commonwealth Coast Conference (CCC) with a rookie of the week nod, the league office announced Monday. The San Ramon, California, product repeated as CCC Rookie of the Week after averaging 4.20 kps on a .228 attack percentage and .167 dps in a 2-2 week.

Keowen helped Suffolk comeback for a 3-2 win at the University of New England Tuesday, Oct. 29 to get the week going. In that five-set thriller, she produced a career-high 24 kills and 18 digs for her seventh double-double of the year. Two days later, she registered 11 kills in a straight set setback to Regis. She opened the tri-match with another 11-kill offensive output in a 3-0 loss to Gordon. She wrapped up the week with an impressive 17 kill outing on a .452 connection rate in a 3-1 victory over Fitchburg State.

With this week's award, Keowen now has five weekly honors to her credit this year, the most by a single student-athlete in Suffolk volleyball's record books. Four of her awards have been thanks to her being the best rookie over a seven-day stretch with one player of the week distinction. Her four rookie of the week nods ties Harmony Johnson's record, which was set by the Riverside, California, product in 2019 with a quartet of GNAC Rookie of the Week. 

Paced by Keowen, Suffolk has received seven CCC weekly awards in 2021. Kenzley Bell and Morgan Kelsey are responsible for the other two as the junior and freshman each were named libero of the week Oct. 18 and Sept. 20, respectively. 

Keowen and the Rams return to action tonight, Monday, Oct. 25 when they wrap up their non-conference calendar against Emmanuel. The Beantown battle has a 7 p.m. first serve at Larry E. and Michael S. Smith Court.
