Filloramo, Leavey Collect GNAC Weekly Awards

GNAC RELEASE

WINTHROP, Mass.  – After its first two weeks of the 2021-22 campaign, Suffolk women's indoor track & field saw two rookies, Caitlyn Filloramo and Julia Leavey honored for their efforts with Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) weekly awards. Filloramo was named GNAC Field Athlete of the Week and Leavey earned GNAC Rookie of the Week, the league office announced Monday.

The accolades come on the heels of performances at the first two events of the season; Boston University's Sharon Colyear-Danville Season Opener and Northeastern's Joe Donahue Games.

Filloramo, a Southport, Connecticut native, made her debut in two events at BU. In the weight throw she finished 10th with a 10.53-meter toss and legged a 9.84-meter throw in the shot put to take 14th. A week later at the Joe Donahue Games she out performed her entrance onto the collegiate scene with a 13.37-meter weight throw showing to take third overall. That toss was the highest of NCAA Division III competitors at Northeastern's meet.

Leavey burst out onto the college scene at Sharon Colyear-Danville Season Opener Dec. 4 with a 15th-place performance in the high jump clearing 1.45 meters. She hit that mark in the same event a week later to finish second at the Joe Donahue Games. The freshman from Natick, Massachusetts, shined in her first-ever 60-meter hurdles though as she clocked the dash in 9.92 to take second behind NCAA Division I foe Mariah Fede of Northeastern. That mark put the freshman on the verge of qualifying for regionals as it is tops in the GNAC and tied for ninth in New England.

The Rams duo, who both picked up weekly accolades for the first time in their careers, is the first pair to earn weekly honors from the GNAC in the same week since Emily Manfra and Allison Rodrigues were named the conference's best track and field athletes, respectively, March 2, 2020. Leavey is the league's best rookie over a seven-day stretch since Savannah Goddeeris took home the recognition Feb. 2, 2020, while Filloramo is the best field athlete in a week's span since Rodrigues March 2, 2020.

Suffolk is idle until Saturday, Jan. 22 when it competes at Plymouth State's Panther Invitational in Plymouth, New Hampshire.
