WNE Takes Down Women’s Tennis, 6-2

SPRINGFIELD, Mass. – Suffolk women's tennis was tripped up by Western New England, 6-2, in Commonwealth Coast Conference action Tuesday afternoon at Volvo Tennis courts.

HOW IT HAPPENED
The Golden Bears swept doubles play in verse order to take momentum in singles action where Gabrielle Tirot defeated Alek Kickham, 6-0, 6-1, at No. 5 doubles to set up match point.  

Anastaiya Zaharava's 6-2, 6-0 bested Gianna Arace in the fourth singles spot to put the Rams on the board, but WNE's Catie Seklecki locked up the victory for the Golden ers with a 6-0, 6-1 win in the sixth singles slot.

With the match already secured for Western New England, Caren Urbano picked up one more point for Suffolk as the senior won by retirement on court one.

NOTEWORTHY

  • Zakharava competed on the fourth singles court for the first time in her collegiate career. 
  • Zakharava is unbeaten in college play at No. 4 singles (1-0). 
  • Zakharava logged her first-ever golden set at No. 4 singles. The golden set is the fourth of her collegiate career, first since producing one at No. 5 singles over Curry, Sept. 27, 2023. 
  • Tran made her collegiate debut.
