Women’s Tennis Clips Curry, 5-4

CAMBRIDGE, Mass. – Suffolk women's tennis secured its first Commonwealth Coast Conference victory In thrilling fashion as it took down Curry, 5-4, Wednesday night at Belmont Hill.

HOW IT HAPPENED
Suffolk grabbed a 2-0 early on in doubles play. Nia Bebb and Angela Gross combined forces to best Grace Cooper and Cayla Osowski, 8-4, in the second slot to even the playing field before Anastasiya Zakharava and Alek Kickham defeated Sam Ferrara and Cate Pierce, 8-1, to send Suffolk in front.  

The Colonels captured their first point of the night as their top tandem of Sasha Bprkov and Serena Wilson took down Caren Urbano and Rachel Hill, 8-7 (7-2) to make it 2-1 Rams as the match transitioned into singles action.  

Zakharava's 6-0, 6-4, triumph over Osowski in the fifth singles slot extended the blue-and-gold's advantage to 3-1. 

From there, Curry earned wins on courts one, two and four in that order to put the Rams in 4-3 hole.  

Nia Bebb came up big for the blue-and-gold as the freshman compiled a 6-0, 6-7(4-7), 6-4 win against Ferrara in the third position to tie things up at 4-all. 

Everything came down to the sixth spot where Kickham faced Pierce. The freshman from West Roxbury's first collegiate singles win was the difference maker as she put together a 6-1, 6-2 triumph to push Suffolk past the Colonels.

NOTEWORTHY

  • Suffolk moved to 2-1 all-time against Curry. 
  • The Rams defeated the Colonels for the first time since the inaugural meeting, Sept. 18, 2021. 
  • It is the first time that the Suffolk, Curry match was decided via a 5-4 decision. 
  • As the home team, the Rams are unbeaten (2-0-0) against the Colonels. 
  • Suffolk secured its first win over Curry under Drew Goldstein's guidance. 
  • The victory is the Rams first CCC triumph in the Goldstein era and is Suffolk's second-ever, first since it bested Curry, 6-3, Sept. 18, 2021. 
  • Prior to first serve, Suffolk honored its two seniors, Urbano and Gross. 
  • Bebb notched her first collegiate golden set. 
  • Zakharava logged her second golden set of the season, third of her collegiate career, two of which came in the second slot. 
  • Kickham picked up her first collegiate singles win.
