WEST HARTFORD, Conn. – Suffolk women's tennis began the 2021 campaign with a 9-0 victory over Saint Joseph (Conn.) Saturday afternoon.

HOW IT HAPPENED
Suffolk took a 3-0 lead into singles action after sweeping doubles play. The Rams quickly locked up the match in singles play. Down the stretch, the Blue Jays kept the blue-and-gold on their toes down the stretch as courts three and four needed a third-set tiebreaker to determine a winner. Both Kendall Smith and Barbara Consales prevailed in those spots to preserve the shutout win for the Suffolk.

2 – Ilda Ascic (Suffolk) defeated Kathleen Gilland (USJ), 6-3, 6-3
3 – Kendall Smith (Suffolk) defeated Elaine Griffiths (USJ), 6-3, 7-6 (10-8)
4 – Barbara Consales (Suffolk) defeated Anaya Srivatsav (USJ), 4-6, 6-0, 10-7
5 – Giuliana Claus (Suffolk) defeated Julia Michaud (USJ), 6-0, 6-0
6 – Bianca Prescott (Suffolk) defeated Maria Porth (USJ), 6-2, 6-0 

DOUBLES
1 – Sarah Mezini/Ilda Ascic (Suffolk) defeated Emily Kerr/Elaina Griffiths (USJ), 8-2
2 – Kendall Smith/Barbara Consales (Suffolk) defeated Kathleen Gilland/Ananya Srivatsav (USJ), 8-4
3 – Dyani Mosquera/Alyssa Blade (Suffol) defeated Julia Michaud/Jenna Griffith (USJ), 8-3 

NOTEWORTHY

  • Suffolk snapped a four-match skid on opening day since 2007. 
  • The Rams are now 5-9 in the first match of the year since 2007. 
  • The blue-and-gold began the campaign on the road for the first time since 2017. Suffolk is 1-6 when puling the curtain back on the season away from home since 2007. 
  • Suffolk and USJ battled St. Joseph (Conn.) in its first match of the year for the first time in the Rams' record books, which date back through the 2007 campaign.  
  • Suffolk recorded its first ever shutout victory on day one since 2007. Suffolk is now 1-2 in shutouts in match 1. 
  • The Rams improved to 13-1 all-time against the Blue Jays. 
  • Claus assembled a golden match in her collegiate debut. 
  • Mezini (No. 1), Consales (No. 4) and Prescott (No. 6) each put together a golden set in singles play.
