Bears Rolls Past Women's Tennis

The Bridgewater State University women's tennis team improved to 2-0 on the young season as the host Bears downed Suffolk University, 9-0, on Thursday afternoon at the Rosen Memorial Tennis Courts.
 
The game marked the home-opener for the Bears who knocked off the Rams for the fifth time in the last five years.
 
Bridgewater swept all three doubles flights and all six singles matches to post the shutout victory.
 
Senior Jackie McGuirk (Raynham, Mass.) and junior Melissa Flynn (Stoneham, Mass.) registered an 8-0 win at third doubles to open the scoring, while seniors Jenna Williamson (Ludlow, Mass.) andLauren Hopp (Dartmouth, Mass.) teamed up for an 8-2 decision at the top flight.  Sophomore Alison Vautrin (Somerset, Mass.) and junior Rachael Eramo (Rowley, Mass.) rounded out doubles play with an 8-6 victory at the second spot.
 
The Bears would record straight set wins in five of the six singles matches with Williamson winning at number one (6-0, 6-3), McGuirk at the second flight (6-0, 6-2), Hopp at number three (6-1, 6-1), Flynn at number five (6-0, 6-3) and Eramo at the sixth flight (6-1, 6-1).
 
In upcoming action, Bridgewater will compete in the 29th Annual Grass Court Doubles Tournament hosted by Salve Regina University at the International Tennis Hall of Fame in Newport, Rhode Island on Saturday at one.  Suffolk (0-2) heads to UMass Dartmouth next Tuesday afternoon for a 3:30 match with the Corsairs.
