Gordon Gets by Women’s Soccer, 1-0

EAST BOSTON – An early goal by the Fighting Scots proved to be the difference as Suffolk women's soccer dropped a 1-0 decision to its Commonwealth Coast Conference counterpart Gordon Saturday at James A. Sartori Stadium at East Boston Memorial Park.

HOW IT HAPPENED
Ava Forbes-Smith potted the lone goal of the CCC contest. The Fighting Scots beat a Rams defender to launch a wide-open attempt over 20 yards out. The shot was was out of the grasp of Suffolk keeper Sophia Barker to give Gordon a one-goal edge 16:01 into the affair.  

All of Suffolk's offense came in the first half of the first stanza with three shots on target, all turned aside by Emily Bengston and another blocked by the Fighting Scots defense to keep the visitors in front, 1-0, at the half.  

The Rams tried to work their way back into the thick of things throughout the second stanza. Suffolk's best chance came off Isa Pereza's boot 30 yards out. The freshman fired a shot dead on, but Bengston made a jumping punch save to keep the lead for Gordon with just over four minutes remaining in the contest. 

Suffolk got a corner kick opportunity after Pereza's near equalizer. The Rams could not take advantage of the corner though and the game ended in Gordon's favor. 

KEEPING UP WITH THE KEEPERS

  • Barker had four saves in the setback. 
  • Bengston finished the outing with six saves for the shutout. 

STATISTICALLY SPEAKING

  • Gordon outshot Suffolk, 16-10. 
  • The Rams were more accurate with attempts on target though, 6-5. 
  • The Fighting Scots had five corner kicks, while the Rams took three.
