Porter Pushes Women’s Soccer to 1-0 Shutout Over Wentworth in CCC Debut

EAST BOSTON – Avery Porter put on the hero hat in the second half scoring the only goal in a Commonwealth Coast Conference affair to send Suffolk women's soccer to a 1-0 victory over Wentworth Friday night under the lights of James A. Sartori Stadium at East Boston Memorial Park.

Arden Ferrari-Henry registered a career-high eight saves to preserve the CCC-opening shutout for the Rams, the program's first-time it lifted the lid on its CCC campaign in the win column.

THE BASICS
SCORE: Suffolk 1 | Wentworth 0
RECORDS: Suffolk (4-1-1, 1-0-0 CCC) | Wentworth (0-4-0, 0-1-0 CCC)

HOW IT HAPPENED
After a scoreless first frame, Suffolk erased the shutout within the first four minutes of the second stanza. Kylie Flynn set up a corner and sent a perfect center pass towards a cluster of Rams stationed in front of the Leopards net. Porter jumped to meet the pass with her head and directed past the jumping gloves of Claire Reif to make it 1-0 Rams in the 49th minute.

History nearly repeated itself just about 15 minutes later as Flynn went to take the Rams second corner kick of the day. The junior booted the ball once again to a perfect spot in ahead of the cage and Porter was there to meet the dish. This time the Rams rookie header went just wide of the net and the one-goal remained.

Wentworth's best opportunities came one after another with just about 13 minutes remaining in the second half. Back-to-back Leopards corners resulted in shots. The first was gobbled up by Ferrari-Henry, while Lily Carlson's header went wide to keep the 1-0 edge in Suffolk's favor.

With just over seven minutes on the left, Lilli Rick went on a breakaway and had a one-on-one with Ferrari-Henry. Rick shot low and tried to cross the ball over the goal line, but the Rams' rookie keeper made a diving save and the tips of her gloves denied the shot to hold Wentworth off the board.

WIT had one last shot with 1:43 left on the clock as Emily Hagen tested Ferrari-Henry once more. Suffolk's keeper stood up to the challenge, making her eighth save of the night, to lock up the league triumph.
