#4 Gordon Sneaks Past #5 Women’s Soccer in CCC Quarterfinals

WENHAM, Mass. – Although Suffolk women's soccer found the back of the net against the Fighting Scots for the first time since 2011, fourth-seeded Gordon potted a pair of unanswered strikes, one in each half, to defeat the fifth-seeded Rams, 2-1, in the Commonwealth Coast Conference (CCC) Quarterfinals Saturday afternoon at Brigham Complex.

THE BASICS
SCORE: Suffolk 1 | Gordon 2
RECORDS: Suffolk (11-6-0) | Gordon (13-3-1)

HOW IT HAPPENED
Just 6:38 into the action Suffolk got on the scoreboard as freshmen Lily Christian and Jazmya Harris teamed up for a goal. Harris set up her classmate for a strike that gave the blue-and-gold a one-goal edge early on.

Gordon responded with just over a dozen minutes remaining in the first frame. Sarah Siergena got past Allison Rodrigues for a tally with the help of Shelby Jones to level the playing field at 1-all, a score that stood half.

The Fighting Scots came out of intermission determined. Rodrigues stood tall for the Rams, however, until an unlucky bounce for the blue-and-gold paid off for the hosts. This time Jones' boot put the ball away as Rodrigues was pulled out of position by Kendra Wentling to give Gordon the go ahead, 2-1, at the 72:35-minute mark.

Suffolk's last and only chance came off a corner kick. Klaudia Rushi lofted the ball into the pack hustled in front of the Fighting Scots goal. Lucy Tretter met the pass and headed the ball towards the net. The shot nicked the crossbar to keep the Rams off the board.

Gordon remained in control the rest of the way to secure the post-season win.

  • Tori Paine stopped two of the three shots she faced.
