Western New England Ends Women’s Soccer’s Win Streak, 1-0

SPRINGFIELD, Mass. – Suffolk women's soccer saw its three-game win streak come halted Saturday afternoon as the Golden Bears of Western New England edged the Rams, 1-0, at Supernant Stadium.

HOW IT HAPPENED
The Golden Bears got on the board early off a breakaway from Allison Bruehwiler. WNE's senior was able to streak into the box all by herself as she got past the Rams' defense for a one-on-one with Allison Rodrigues. Bruehwiler slotted the ball into the lower right of the twine to give the hosts a 1-0 lead 8:21 into the contest.  

For the rest of the first 45 minutes the teams' played even soccer, but the second stanza saw Suffolk step up. The Rams had ample scoring chances in an attempt to even the score. The Golden Bears back line denied the Rams chances to get back on the contest though. One of the blue-and-gold's best looks came from Nicole Morin-Trotta, however, Molly McLaughin secured the shot on target to keep the Rams off the scoreboard.  

As time dwindled down, WNE kept possession of the ball for the final three minutes to hold on to the one-goal Commonwealth Coast Conference (CCC) decision.  

KEEPING UP WITH THE KEEPERS

  • Rodrigues recorded 10 saves despite the setback. 
  • McLaughlin picked up three stops in the shutout effort.  

STATISTICALLY SPEAKING

  • Morin-Trotta took three shots and put two on target to be responsible for 66 percent (2-3) of the Rams' shots on goal. 
  • Western New England outshot Suffolk, 17-4, and had an 11-3 shots on goal advantage.
  • Corner wise, the Rams took just two, while the Golden Bears had six.  

NOTEWORTHY

  • Suffolk and Western New England met for the first time. 
  • Rodrigues matched a career-high 10-save effort. She grabbed 10 stops for the fourth time in her career and second time this season.
