Schmidt Sends Women’s Hockey to 4-3 Overtime Win at Salve Regina

MIDDLETOWN, R.I. – Bella Schmidt lifted Suffolk women's hockey to a 4-3 overtime victory over Salve Regina Friday night at St. George's Rink. The freshman scored nearly halfway through the overtime to break a 3-all tie and sent the Rams to their third victory in a row.

HOW IT HAPPENED
After a scoreless first frame, an action-packed second featured four goals, two from both teams. Suffolk scores its pair in the opening seven minutes. First Alessia Di Silvestro used a feed from Sam Molind to put the blue-and-gold on the board at the 1:30 mark and 5:26 later Liliana Moose lit the lamp with help from Schmidt and Vanessa Stuart.  

The Seahawks evened the battled as they potted a pair of pucks in a 4:45 span starting at the 13:07 mark.  

Out of the second intermission, Salve Regina took the lead behind Gina Richard's power play goal. 

The blue-and-gold used a power play strike of its own to even things up at 3-all. Jenna Caballero chipped in the game-tying goal thanks to assists from Molind and Moose with 8:59 remaining in regulation.  

Both goaltenders took care of business throughout the rest of the third to force the extra session. 

Lily O'Neil faced the first shot of the OT and denied Emma Pereira's attempt before stopping Maddie Cox's shot.  

Schmidt put on the hero hat the 2:16 mark thanks to aid from Elise Wainwright and Sydney Fascetta.   

NETMINDER NOTES

  • O'Neil notched 28 saves in the overtime victory. 
  • Sydney Baxter had 22 saves for the Seahawks. 
  • Elle Kopecky played in net for Salve Regina as well.  

STATISTICALLY SPEAKING

  • Schmidt and Moose contributed one goal and one assist apiece. 
  • Moliind notched a pair of points as well on two helpers. 
  • Caballero and Di Silvestro scored one goal each. 
  • Fascetta, Stuart and Wainwright each had one assist. 
  • Salve Regina outshot Suffokl, 31-26. 
  • The Seahawks had the upperhand in face offs as well, 30-23. 
  • Suffolk went 1-for-4 on the power play, while SRU converted 66.7 percent (2-3) of its power play chances.

  • Suffolk won its third game in a row, the longest win streak under Abby Ostrom's guidance.
  • The Rams snapped a two-game skid against the Seahawks. 
  • Suffolk moved to 7-2-0 all-time against Salve Regina.
