Women’s Hockey Comes Up Short at Salve Regina, 4-3

MIDDLETOWN, R.I. – Suffolk women's hockey faced a three-goal deficit in the third period, mounted a comeback, but ran out of time to ultimately slip to the Seahawks of Salve Regina, 4-3, in Commonwealth Coast Conference action at St. George's Rink Saturday night.

HOW IT HAPPENED
The teams traded goals in the opening period to head into the first intermission deadlocked at 1-all. Riley Esposito put away an unassisted tally at the midway point before Liliana Moose lit the lamp with 41 seconds remaining in the frame. Alessi Di Silvestro and Anya Nichipor assisted on the Rams' goal.  

Salve Regina regained the edge with 15 seconds to go before the second intermission. Emily Wroblewski tucked the puck away thanks to help from Maddie Cox and Esposito to send Suffolk to the locker room down one, 2-1. 

Wroblewski struck again 3:16 into the third and a power play marker by Grace Dumond padded SRU's advantage to 4-1. 

With less than five minutes in regulation to go Izzy Buckett was pulled from her post in net and things got interesting. First, Sydney Fascetta used a feed from Jenna Caballero to slice the distance in half. Caballero scored her own goal at the 18:09 mark to get the gap down the one. Maddie Gagliano helped make it a 4-3 game with 1:51 to play. 

Suffolk's las two attempts on target were denied by Sydney Baxter and the score stood at 4-3 as the buzzer sounded.  

NETMINDER NOTES

  • Buckett notched a 13-save effort. 
  • Baxter logged 30 saves in the victory.  

STATISTICALLY SPEAKING

  • Caballero, Fascetta and Moose scored for Suffolk. 
  • Caballero finished with two points on one goal and one assist. 
  • Di Silvestro, Nichipor, and Gagliano tallied one assist apiece. 
  • Suffolk outshot Salve Regian, 33-17. 

NOTEWORTHY

  • The three goals scored are the most in the Abby Ostrom era. 
  • Caballero had her first assist of the season. 
  • Moose found the back of the net for the first time this year. 
  • Nichipor and DI Silvestro each produced their first collegiate points on one assist each.
  • Fascetta and Gagliano both notched their first points as a Rams. The pair scored one goal apiece. 

WHAT'S NEXT?
Suffolk is set to face Nichols in a home-and-home series Nov. 10-11. The Rams will play on the road Friday at 5:40 p.m., before hosting the Bison Saturday in a Suicide Awareness match at Louis E. Porrazzo Memorial Skating Rink at 4:50 p.m.
