Women’s Hockey Represented on Spain’s National Team at IIHF Women’s World Championship

BOSTON – Taylor Wasylk, Suffolk women's hockey head coach, and Rams' senior Sofia Scilipoti are turning in their blue-and-gold for Spain's red-and-yellow for the upcoming International Ice Hockey Federation (IIHF) Women's World Championships. Wasylk will serve as an assistant coach for Spain's national team, while Scilipoti will skate as a player.

The IIHF Women's World Championship will run April 2-7 in Mexico City, Mexico. Along with Spain, Division II participants include Mexico, Iceland, Latvia and Chinese Taipei. The full schedule of events and how to follow Team Spain visit the tournament's website, here

"I could not be mroe excited to be in Mexicot City with the Spanish National Team," Wasylk said. "This is a great group of players who are constantlyl striving to be their absolute best, and I am honored to be part of their journey at the World Championships this year." 

Wasylk continued, "The experience is of course even more especial to be here with a member of the Suffolk women's hockey program, and I am super excited to support Sofia (Scilipoti) as she looks to have success on the world stage." 

Wasylk, a three-time CCM/AHCA Division III Coach of the Year finalist, will make her international coaching debut with Team Spain. Over five seasons behind Suffolk's bench, Wasylk has assembled a 64-44-7 overall record, one NCAA Division III Tournament berth and Commonwealth Coast Conference postseason and regular-season crowns. She has coached two CCM/AHCA All-Americans, two CCC Players of the Year and 26 all-league selections. 

Scilipoti, meanwhile, is back on Spain's roster for the third time. She has previously played for Team Spain in the 2022 IIHF Women's World Championships, where she helped the team to a bronze medal finish, and the 2022 Olympic Qualifier Tournament. 

Over three seasons as a Ram, Scilipoti has been instrumental to Suffolk's success including its CCC title this season and the program's first-ever trip to the Big Dance. The two-time All-CCC second-team selection assembled a career stat line of 49 points in 49 games. The Toronto, Ontario native found the back of the net 22 times, twice to lift Suffolk to victory including the game-winner in the 2023 CCC Championship against Endicott March 4.
