Women’s Hockey’s Win Streak Halted at Western New England 

WEST SPRINGFIELD, Mass. – The Suffolk women's hockey team's program-record eight-game win streak came to an end Tuesday night in a 4-0 shutout to Western New England in Commonwealth Coast Conference (CCC) play at the Olympia Ice Center.

HOW IT HAPPENED
Western New England grabbed a two-goal lead in the first period as the host scored two pucks in a 3:04 span 5:25 into the conference contest. Katie Cronin was the first Golden Bear to strike with Allison Walker following suite. 

The hosts added to their advantage in the middle period as Cronin put her second puck of the night away at the 5:52 minute mark on the power play to send Suffolk in the second intermission down 3-0.  

Cronin completed the hat trick performance on the man-up opportunity 11:12 into the third to give WNE a 4-0 cushion. Rieley Jessie Gerelli stood up the task over the final 8:58 seconds as the Golden Bears goaltender stopped all of Suffolk's eight attempts to preserve not only the win for WNE, but the shutout.  

NETMINDER NOTES

  • Lily O'Neil picked up 15 stops in the setback. 
  • Gerelli finished with 47 saves in the cleansheet.  

STATISTICALLY SPEAKING

  • Suffolk outshot the Golden Bears, 47-19. 
  • Leslie Steiner anchored the Rams attack with six shots on target. 
  • The Golden Bears won the face-of battle, 30-27. 
  • The blue-and-gold did not take advantage of one of its three power plays, while WNE scored on 40 percent (2-5) of its man-up chances.  

NOTEWORTHY

  • Suffolk and Western New England tangled for the first time. 
  • The Rams were kept off the scoreboard for the first time since Connecticut College blanked Suffolk, 3-0, Jan. 14, 2020.
  • O'Neill moved to 1-1-0 in net this season.
