Women’s Hockey Donates to Suffolk Cares Leading Up to World Hunger Day

BOSTON – Suffolk women's hockey looks to not only shutout its opponents on the ice this season, but to oust another tough foe; hunger. Leading up to World Hunger Day, Rams upperclassmen teamed up with the Suffolk CARES Pantry to help give back to members of the University community in need.

The Suffolk CARES Pantry operates solely on donations from the University's community and established partnerships.

With that in mind, seniors Shana CoteStephanie MoyKiley SearlesSydney Tietz and Julia Volpe headed out on Thursday, Sept. 23 with a mission to collect some of the pantry's wish list items like coffee, condiments, juices and house hold necessities. After picking up a full-cart haul, the quintuple delivered the goods to the pantry's campus location, 12th Floor of 73 Tremont Street.

Suffolk women's hockey has partnered with Suffolk CARES for several years with multiple initiatives like Under Armour's Through this Together campaign in May 2020, as well as head coach Taylor Wasylk gifting the proceeds from her Buffalo Beauts shirsey (shirt, jersey) sales to the cause for the last two seasons.

This particular donation by Suffolk's youngest varsity program and delivered by five members of Suffolk's Class of 2022 was made to help members of the University's community with food intolerances days prior to World Hunger Day 2021, which will highlight the critical important of access to education, healthcare and technology in ending hunger, which is not just about food. The end of hunger and poverty is possible when people have the necessary tools and resources and when solutions are community led – by and for the people living in conditions of chronic hunger.

Suffolk CARES embodies the theme for World Hunger Day every day by assisting students in finding the best resources for their individual needs and empowers students to advocate for themselves so that they may remain personally and cademically successful. Suffolk CARES consistent of a combination of tangible resources and programs managed by the director of student outreach and support.

Member of Ram Nation can join Suffolk women's hockey in taking a stand against hunger for World Hunger Day 2021 by making a gift to Suffolk CARES as well either by purchasing an item of the CARES pantry Amazon wish list here, or by making a monetary donation here.

Wasylk's squad will continue its community service initiatives and passion projects throughout the 2021-22 campaign, which is set to start Friday, Oct. 29 against Plymouth State at the Rams' home ice, Louis E. Porrazzo Memorial Skating Rink in East Boston.
