Women’s Hockey Shutouts Johnson & Wales, 8-0, Burton Nets Hat Trick

EAST BOSTON – Suffolk women's hockey pushed in the most goals in program history in a New England Hockey Conference (NEHC) match, three of which belonged to Maddy Burton, and Kristen Caporusso saved every shot she faced to blank Johnson & Wales, 8-0, Friday night at Louis E. Porrazzo Memorial Rink.

HOW IT HAPPENED
Johnson & Wales broke the ice with the first three shots on goal of the game, forcing Caporussointo a few early saves. Suffolk would repay fairly quickly eventually finding the first goal with 13:15 remaining in the first frame. Juila Volpe's tip pass found Burton, who went on the move and found Izzy Hendry at the blue line.  who found The defenseman wristed the puck catching the post as it hit the back of the net for a 1-0 lead.  

Suffolk quickly doubled its lead four minutes later with Burton grabbed her first goal. Volpe combined with Shana Cote, who fed the puck into the slot for Burton to pounce for 2-0. Shortly after Suffolk would pick up a third goal as Sydney Tietz' friendly deflection gave the Rams a 3-0 cushion, which the team took into the locker room.  

Early in the second, a delayed penalty for the Wildcats gave Suffolk a 6-on-4 advantage. Burton collected a loose puck following a Rams shot and speared it past the Jasmine Mucci for the four-goal lead with 2:51 left in the middle period.   

Shortly after the restart, 36 seconds to be exact, Grace Scholz cashed in on the following power play. The sophomore increased the lead to five with help from Haley Poloskey and Jesse Kennedy.  

Less than three minutes into the final frame, Suffolk capitalized on the power play for the third time on the night. Mucci was peppered with shots from Suffolk. The Wildcats goalie knocked down attempts from Poloskey and Scholz, but Kennedy's rebound found the back of the net to push the cushion to six.   

Suffolk's scoring continued even with the Rams on the penalty kill. Burton completed her hat trick in short handed fashion with a go-ahead pass from Kennedy. The junior shifted from left to right, beat Mucci glove side to extend the distance to seven.  

The Rams final goal of the day came with 3:20 left in regulation as Poloskey and Kennedy set up Volpe for her first marker of the year. 

NETMINDER NOTES

  • Caporusso earned her second shutout of the season in a 28-save performance.
  • Mucci held off 29 of Suffolk's attempts on the evening. 

STATISTICALLY SPEAKING

  • Burton recorded a hat trick and added one assist for a four-point effort. 
  • Kennedy and Poloskey each handed out three assists with the former scoring one goal as well. 
  • Scholz and Tietz each tallied a goal and one assist over the 60 minutes.
  • Volpe was in the mix contributing one goal and two assists, respectively. 
  • Hendry collected one goal with Cote and Payton Dockus each dishing out one helper. 
  • Suffolk outshot the Wildcats 37-28, and controlled from the face-off circle 42-27.

NOTEWORTHY

  • Suffolk's eight goals are the most against a NEHC opponent in program history. 
  • The eight marks are a season-best for Suffolk and sit second in program history behind a nine-goal effort in a 9-0 cleansheet over Anna Maria Nov. 14, 2018. 
  • The Rams defeated Johnson & Wales for the first time since a 4-1 triumph Nov. 16, 2018. 
  • The cleansheet is the second for Suffolk in the JWU series, first since series opener, a 3-0 shutout Nov. 3, 2018. 
  • Both games in the Suffolk, JWU series in East Boston have ended in a shutout in Suffolk's favor. 
  • Suffolk potted its first shorthanded goal of the year. 
  • Suffolk scored its first shorthanded goal of the season.
  • Three power play goals are the most in a single game in program history. 
  • All four of the Rams power play goals this season have come against the Wildcats. 
  • The blue-and-gold blanked it second opponent of the season, eight of program history. 
  • Caporusso has been the gloves to each of Suffolk's eight shutouts in program history. 
  • Burton came the second player in program history to produce a hat trick, first since Meagan MacNeil made history with a hat trick out in a 7-3 victory over Salem State Dec. 7, 2019. 
  • Burton built a personal-best stat line with three goals and career-high four points. 
  • Poloskey produced a career-best in points (3) and assists (3). 
  • Kennedy had personal-high numbers in points (4) and helpers (3). 
  • Kennedy and Poloskey are the second and third students to dish out three set-ups in one game this season behind Madison Scheinberg's three-assist effort in a 5-5 stalemate with Nichols Nov. 22, 2019. 
  • Volpe collected her first points of the season with a two-point performance. 
  • Tietz notched her first assist of the year.
  • Suffolk's 13 assists mark a season-high for the Rams and are the second-most in program history, behind the Rams' record of 15 helpers, which came in a 9-0 win over Anna Maria, Nov. 14, 2018. 
  • The eight-goal margin of victory is the second largest in program history behind the 9-0 decision versus Anna Maria Nov. 14, 2018.
