Women’s Golf Looks to Reclaim NEIGA Championship this Weekend

BOSTON – Suffolk women's golf aims to put an exclamation point on its 2023 fall campaign as it vies to reclaim the New England Intercollegiate Golf Association (NEIGA) Championship this weekend. The seventh annual regional event at the Captains Golf Course in Brewster, Massachusetts tees off Saturday, Oct. 14 and runs through Sunday, Oct. 15. LAST TIME OUT
Suffolk women's golf capped off its weekend in impressive fashion as the Rams claimed the first four spots including individual medalist honors for Ellie Yarbrough to capture first place at the NWGC Fall Invitational Sunday at the Tekoa Country Club.

ABOUT THE NEIGA
The New England Intercollegiate Golf Association (NEIGA) is a non-profit organization, which was first organized in 1934 at the Oakley Country Club in Watertown, Massachusetts. NEIGA is believed to be the largest gathering of collective players from all levels of NCAA competing at the same location on a 36-hole layout. There are currently 46 New England colleges and universities as members of the NEIGA.

THE COURSE
Two championship golf courses at one location line in the Captains Golf Course. Together, the par-72 Port Course and the par-72 Starboard Course deliver 36 holes.   

THE FIELD
Joining Suffolk on the Cape will be Babson, Bates, Hartford, Husson, Keene State, Nichols, Wellesley, Westfield and Worcester State. 

RAPID REWIND
A year ago, the Rams put together an eighth-place performance at the NEIGA Championships. Suffolk secured eighth in the 11-team field with a two-day card of 750.  

The sixth women's regional event was one of the largest fields in the event's history.  

SUFFOLK AT NEIGAs

  • Suffolk has been featured in the NEIGA field since the inaugural women's regional championship in 2017. 
  • The Rams have claimed three NEIGA Championships: 2017, 2018 and 2021. 
  • Suffolk's best two-day score at NEIGAs came in 2018 when it shot a 716 to top the three-team field and claim it second regional crown. 
  • Two Rams have earned individual medalist status. Aine Dillon became the first-ever in 2018 and Isabel Smith secured the honor in 2021. 
  • Eight Rams have combined for a dozen All-NEIGA honors. 
  • Suffolk secured five All-NEIGA nods in 2018. The five in one year are a Rams record. 
  • Brooke Chapman is the most NEIGA decorated individual with three All-NEIGA accolades on her resume (2017, 2018, 2019).
  • Current Suffolk student-athletes Isabel Smith and Ellie Yarbrough have earned All-NEIGA accolades once in their career. 
  • Suffolk has not had an All-NEIGA honoree since 2021.  

RAMS RECOGNITION
For the second time this season, Suffolk women's golf took home both weekly awards for the Northeast Women's Golf Conference (NWGC) as Ellie Yarbrough was named Golfer of the Week and Brooke Bugajewski grabbed Rookie of the Week, the league office announced.
