Women’s Golf Runner-Up at NWGC Championships

REXFORD, N.Y. – Suffolk women's golf locked up a second-place performance at the 2022 Northeast Women's Golf Championships over the weekend at the Edison Club.  

The two-day, 36-hole NWGC Tournament was held at on the Edison Club's Par 72, 5, 688-yard course. The Edison Club is a 27-hole facility that hosted the league championship on Holes 1-18. The tournament went back to a two-day format for the first time since 2020.

Suffolk secured the runner-up slot for the second time in as many years with a team card of 751. The Rams shot a 328 on the first day and shaved eight strokes off that showing on Sunday. SUNY Cortland, who claimed all five first-team all-conference spots, won the 2022 crown with a team score of 648.  

Individually, Ellie Yarbrough and Isabel Smith compiled top 10 finishes and for their efforts, finishing sixth through 10th, they each earned spots on the conference's second team. Yarbrough shot an 88 each day on the link for a 176 final, good for seventh in the 36-golfer field. Smith, meanwhile, had a 180 divided between an 85 on the first day and 95 on the second day of action.  

Suffolk has had two student-athletes pick up all-league accolades from the NWGC since the awards were handed out in 2019. Both Yarbrough and Smith garnered the all-conference distinction for the second time in their careers.  

In addition to her Top 10 finish, Smith was named the NWGC Elite Academic Award winner, which is handed out to the student-athlete with the highest-grade point average among all competitors participating in the tournament. Smith, a biotechnology major, has an unblemished 4.00 GPA. 

Madison Scheinberg's score of 197 was good for a share of 17th along with Russel Sage's Alexa Petrovic and Husson's Makenzie Plourde.

One stroke behind Scheinberg was Sophie Kiley in 20th. Paige Irving rounded out the Rams on the course in 27th with a two-day card of 218. 

Suffolk concludes its 2021-22 schedule this Saturday, April 30 at the rescheduled Suffolk Invite, which will be played at the Tekoa Golf Course in Westfield, Massachusetts.
