Women’s Basketball Handles Wentworth, 71-38

BOSTON – Suffolk women's basketball returned to the win column in convincing fashion as the Rams pounced Wentworth, 71-38, Saturday morning in Commonwealth Coast Conference action at Larry E. and Michael S. Smith Court

HOW IT HAPPENED
Suffolk commanded the contest from the get-go as it put the first eight points of the day on the board, six came from Amanda DeAngelis.  

Wentworth hit its first bucket with 4:13 remaining in the first frame. The Leopards hoop turned the action into a back-and-forth affair with the first 10 minutes ending in the Rams' favor, 16-9. 

A 10-2 Rams' run got the second stanza going. WIT sliced the gap down to single digits behind six straight points. Suffolk responded with nine unanswered points of its own to stretch the distance to 18, 35-17, with 3:40 to go before halftime.  

The Leopards logged the last four points of the quarter to make it a 35-21 score at the intermission.  

Suffolk really put the game away in the third as it outscored the visitors 21-7 to extend the advantage 28, 56-28, as the game headed to the fourth. 

The playing field leveled out over the final 10 minutes. Thankfully, all the work the blue-and-gold put into the early action of the affair paid off and the Rams locked up the 71-38

STATISTICALLY SPEAKING

  • DeAngelis finished with 18 points, four boards, three steals, one assist and one block. 
  • Maddie Stewart registered 11 points, nine carom and three handouts. 
  • Colby Guinta pitched in 10 points, three boards, one dime, one block and one takeaway. 
  • Aisling Crowley had a well-balanced effort of eight points and six rebounds with three steals, one assist and one block. 
  • Katie Kirsch added eight points, five caroms, five set-ups, two steals and one block. 
  • As a team, Suffolk shot 42.4 percent (25-59) on the day and converted 94.1 percent (16-17) of its freebies. 
  • The Rams commanded the battle on the boards, 41-32. 
  • Suffolk converted the Leopards' 21 turnovers into 28 points. 
  • 20 of Wentworth's 38 points came in the paint.  

NOTEWORTHY

  • Suffolk snapped a four-game skid. 
  • The Rams defeated Wentworth for the 10th straight meeting to move to 28-9 all-time versus the Leopards. 
  • As the home team, the blue-and-gold is now 12-2 versus the Leopards. 
  • Arlenis Veloz matched a career-high six boards.
  • Kirsch tied a personal-best five handouts. 
  • Ellie Moffat made the first 3-pointer of her collegiate career.
