Women’s Basketball Tripped Up at Roger Williams, 68-52

BRISTOL, R.I. – Suffolk women's basketball hung with Roger Williams, who is receiving votes in the latest WBCA Top-25 Poll, until the third quarter and a scoring draught for the Rams allowed the Hawks to run away with the Commonwealth Coast Conference contest, 68-52, Tuesday night at the Campus Recreation Center Gymnasium.

THE BASICS
SCORE: Suffolk 52 | Roger Williams 68
RECORDS: Suffolk (9-9, 4-7 CCC) | Roger Williams (15-3, 11-0 CCC)

HOW IT HAPPENED
Scoring was sparse on both sides for the opening five minutes. Despite Amanda DeAngelis scoring the first hoop of the day away 50 seconds into the action, the Rams sat in a 4-3 hole.

Both offensives figured things out with just over three minutes to go, and back-and-forth action saw the Hawks take an 11-9 lead into the second quarter.

In the first four minutes of the second stanza, the lead switched six times and landed in RWU's favor, 17-15, at the 6:37-minute mark that turned into a five-point advantage at the midway point.

Suffolk played catch-up multiple times, but faced a six-point distance, 27-21, with 1:37 remaining before halftime. The blue-and-gold put together a 5-1 quarter-ending run to restore the two-point game, 28-26, at the intermission.

Determined helped stir a Suffolk comeback as Maddie Stewart tied the outing at 28-all on the Rams' first possession of the third quarter. See-saw action saw the playing field level twice more and the lead exchange four times with the Hawks taking a 35-34 edge at the 6:33 mark of the third.

A near six-minute scoring lull hit Suffolk, which allowed Roger Williams to build a 45-34 cushion with 1:43 left on the clock in the third.

Katie Kirsch ended the scoring draught for the Rams with a lay-up, however, the host poured in three more points to end the third frame to send Suffolk into the fourth down a dozen, 48-36.

Roger Williams commanded the first few minutes of the worth to quickly make it a 20-point margin, 56-36.

Suffolk continued to claw away at the deficit and triples from Madi Mahoney and Colby Guinta pulled the visitors back within 16, 60-44.

Six unanswered points from the Hawks not only restored the 20-point gap, but stretched it to 22 at the midway point, which forced Ed Leyden to take a timeout.

The Rams managed to outscore the Hawks, 8-2, out of the huddle. The ground was too much to make up for the blue-and-gold and Roger Williams wrapped up the conference victory, 68-52.
