Women’s Basketball Falters at UNE, 86-73

BIDDEFORD, Maine – Suffolk women's basketball put up a huge first half, however, it would not be enough to defeat the University of New England, who came back to defeat the Rams, 86-73, in Commonwealth Coast Conference (CCC) action Wednesday night at Coach Beaudry's Court.

THE BASICS
SCORE: Suffolk 73 | University of New England 86
RECORDS: Suffolk (9-7, 4-5 CCC) | University of New England (11-5, 7-2, CCC)

HOW IT HAPPENED
Suffolk scored the first eight points of the evening and limited the Nor'Easters to the same offensive output for the entire first frame to take a hefty 25-8 edge into the second stanza.

Back-and-forth action consumed the second quarter until the final 34 seconds when UNE scored seven straight. Despite the late scoring surge from the host, the Rams stellar start headed to the intermission up 10, 43-33.

Amanda DeAngelis was the main force to the blue-and-gold's early advantage. The junior captain headed to the locker room with 20 points behind a 7-for-10 showing from the field and was perfect, 6-for-6, at the charity stripe. Arlenis Veloz also impressed in the first half as she supplied 10 points on a 4-for-5 effort from the floor that included a 2-for-2 showing from 3-point land.

Momentum stayed in the Nor'Easters favor to get the second half going. Over the first 4:23 of the third quarter, UNE put together a 15-4 run to flip the script in its favor, 48-47.

The lead was exchanged twice more before the host wrapped up the third stanza on a 6-2 spurt to put Suffolk in a 56-51 hole.

A comeback from the blue-and-gold was kept at bay as the teams traded points in the opening minutes of the final frame before the Nor'Easters built a 17-point gap, 81-64, with 2:23 remaining.

That distance was too much for the Rams to make up and UNE went on to lock up the conference decision.
