Women’s Basketball Tops Curry, 67-55

BOSTON – Suffolk women's basketball has yet to lose in its second semester portion of its 2022-23 schedule as all eight Rams that took Larry E. and Michael S. Smith Court Saturday afternoon contributed at least one point to a 67-55 Commonwealth Coast Conference victory over Curry.

THE BASICS
SCORE: Suffolk 67 | Curry 55
RECORDS: Suffolk (8-4, 4-2 CCC) | Curry (5-8, 1-5 CCC)

HOW IT HAPPENED
Katie Kirsch commanded the game early on as the graduated student led the Rams to an early 8-0 edge four minutes into the action. She had a hand in all of the Rams offensive output to that point, scoring six points herself and assisting on the other bucket, put in by Maddie Stewart.

Curry, who was held without a field goal over the first 4:50 of the outing, rallied around its first hoop, a triple from Lauren Dunn, to pull within two, 12-10, with 3:46 left in the opening frame.

After the teams traded free throws, Kendall Jacques converted an Amanda DeAngelis pass into a lay-up to give the blue-and-gold a 15-10 cushion after the first 10 minutes.

Like the first quarter, it took the Colonels over four minutes to hit a field goal in the second stanza. In that span, Suffolk was only able to build a 20-11 gap behind thanks to three points from DeAngelis and a lay-up by Arlenis Veloz

Once Curry got its first basket of the second, the Colonels found their offensive grove, compiled an 8-2 stretch, to make it a one-possession, 22-19, game with 2:34 to go before the teams headed to the locker rooms.

Fouls and treys played a factor in the final two minutes of the first half. Suffolk, thankfully, capitalized on its trips to the foul line to gain a 34-26 advantage at the break. Five different players produce points in the quarter-ending run. DeAnglis and Colby Guinta supplied three points apiece with Madi Mahoney, Jacques and Veloz pitching in two each.

Scoring was limited for both sides in first few minutes of the third. Curry managed to gain control and chipped the margin down to five, 38-33, at the 4:00 mark.

Suffolk's captains, Kirsch and DeAngelis took over for the Rams. The duo combined for a 6-1 run that made it a double-digit distance, 44-34, for the first time on the afternoon.

The team's traded hoops over the final two minutes of third. The back-and-forth action allowed Suffolk to head to the fourth with a 10-point, 48-38, lead.

See-saw action carried into the fourth. The Colonels coupled back-to-back hoops together to climb back within six, 50-44, with 7:25 on the clock.

Over the next two minutes, Guinta poured in six straight points on a long ball and a traditional three-point play to send Suffolk in front by a dozen, 56-44.

Full court pressure from the Colonels did not help the visitors cause as the Rams managed to keep the gap at near double figures the rest of the way and did their job at the charity stripe in the final minute to preserve the victory.
