DiCecco Ties Scoring Record, Women’s Basketball Falls at Roger Williams, 66-49

BRISTOL, R.I. – Jenni-Rose DiCecco matched a 21-year-old scoring record, it wouldn't be enough as Suffolk women's basketball was sluggish from the floor to slip to Roger Williams, 66-49, in Commonwealth Coast Conference (CCC) action at the Campus Rec Center Tuesday night.

THE BASICS
SCORE: Suffolk 49 | Roger Williams 51
RECORDS: Suffolk (6-3, 1-2 CCC) | Roger Williams (7-0, 3-0 CCC)

HOW IT HAPPENED
Suffolk was limited to just 19 points over the first 20 minutes. The blue-and-gold stayed in the thick of things at the end of the first as it was down by just six, 16-10. The Hawks had their ways with the Rams in the second set of 10 minutes, outscoring the visitors, 19-9, to send Suffolk into the locker room down 16, 35-19.

The distance grew to as many as 21 out of half time before a comeback stirred for Suffolk. With just under four minutes remaining in the third frame, Allie Lopes converted a trip to the charity stripe to two points to spark a quarter-ending 13-4 stretch that trimmed the deficit down to 11, 50-39.

Roger Williams kept Suffolk quiet for the first 4:33 seconds of the fourth quarter to extend the margin back to 18. Lily Patneaude's bucket from behind-the-arc ended the scoring draught in an attempt to spark a comeback.

That Rams rally never came as the Hawks handled business at the free throw line over the next few minutes, to put the game out of reach with two minutes to play, 64-47.

After a scoreless minute, DiCecco turned Natalie Fraioli's steal into a record-setting fast-break lay-up as the graduate student banked in her 15th point of the night to bring her career total to 1,516, tying Katie Norton '20 mark that has stood atop the Rams' scoring list since 2000.

Suffolk's floor general had a chance to rewrite the record as time was expired, but her layup at the buzzer was off the mark for the 66-49 final.

STATISTICALLY SPEAKING

  • DiCecco finished with 15 points and was on the verge of a double-double with nine caroms to go along with four assists and two takeaways.
  • Gabriella DeComo provided 10 points, all of which came in the first half. She shot 4-for-6 from the field and did not miss from 3-point land (2-2).
  • Lopes' seven points all game in the second stanza. She grabbed two rebounds with two dimes, two takeaways and one swat to her credit as well.
  • Amanda DeAngelis pitched in seven points and seven rebounds off the bench.
  • Suffolk shot just 28.3 percent (17-60) from the field and 35.0 percent (7-20) from downtown.
