Softball Drops Back-and-Forth Game 2 at Bridgewater State, 6-5

BRIDGEWATER, Mass. – In a see-saw affair, Suffolk softball landed on the wrong side of a 6-5 decision as Bridgewater State took down the Rams in the nightcap in five innings. The second game of a non-conference doubleheader was called due to darkness.

HOW IT HAPPENED
The scoring started in the first frame for both sides. Catherine Carignan led off the game with a single to second, moved to second on a wild pitch and took second on a productive ground out by Jolie QuintanaBecky Zellin's 13 ground out allowed Carginan to come in and break open the scoring.  

The Bears answered with three runs in the bottom of the first on two hits and pair of Suffolk fielding mishaps to send the blue-and-gold in a 3-1 hole. 

The Rams righted those wrongs in the top of the second with two runs of their own to lock things at 3-all. With Rams on second and third, Carignan brought them both in on a single to center to tie the game at 3-3. The sophomore plated Delaney Doidge and Julia Mills, who both reached on base hits of their own. 

Bears regained the advantage in the home half of the second and extended the edge to a pair with one run in the bottom of the third.  

The teams would go run-for-run the rest of the way before the game was called for darkness for the 6-5 final after 4.5 innings. 

In the fourth, Becky Zellin barreled a one-run base hit up the middle to score Maddie Southers, who walked and stole second to reach scoring position. An inning later, Doidge homered to left.  

PITCHERS PICTURE

  • Ashlyn Conley took the loss after giving up four runs, two earned, on two hits and three walks in 1.1 innings. 
  • Julia Newcomb let up one run on one hit and two walks with one strikeout in 1.2 innings of relief. 
  • Ava Brandow logged a one-run, two-hit, relief effort in 1.0 frames of work out of the pen. 
  • Olyvia Mendonca earned the decision for the Bears behind a two-run, two-hit, one-walk performance in 2.2 innings of relief. 
  • Madelyn Klingel started and gave up three runs on eight hits and fanned one batter in 2.1 innings.  

STATISTICALLY SPEAKING

  • Carignan contributed a 2-for-3 effort with a pair of RBI and one run scored. 
  • Doidge logged a 2-for-3 effort with a homer, the lone extra-base hit of the outing for the blue-and-gold. She brought in one run and scored twice. 
  • Mills added one run and one hit. 
  • Jolie QuintanaElla TurnbullDiana Rucinski and Bella Rocha-Medeiros all chipped in one hit. 
  • Maddie Southers itched in one walk and one run. 
  • Zellin brought in two runs on one hit. 

NOTEWORTHY

  • Suffolk moved to 1-2 against BSU. 
  • The blue-and-gold is 1-1 versus the Bears when playing in Bridgewater, Mass. 
  • Newcomb made her season pitching debut of the. 
  • Doidge barreled her first homer of the season, third of her collegiate career.
