BOSTON – Suffolk softball takes a break from Commonwealth Coast Conference action Tuesday, April 2 when it hosts Salem State at East Boston Memorial Park. The doubleheader has a 2:30 p.m. game one first pitch.

Down seven in the seventh, Suffolk softball put together a four-run rally, but was stopped there by Western New England and the Rams fell, 10-7, in game two of a Commonwealth Coast Conference doubleheader at the Golden Bears Softball Park.

RAMS RUNDOWN
Suffolk split its CCC opening twinbill at Western New England Saturday to sit 8-10 on the season. The Rams won game one, 7-2, before falling in the nightcap, 10-7. 

Four different bats have brought in double-digit runs this season in Ella Turnbull (15), Becky Zellin (13), Julia Mills(12) and Jolie Quintana (10). Mills has a team-best 23 hits, while Lily Gustafson sit second on the squad with 21 and Turnbull rounds out the top trio with 20. Run wise, Gustafson has scored a team-best 18 times, Maddie Southershas added 17 runs and Zellin has 12 runs scored to her credit.  

In the circle, Lily Newhall and Cynthia Rucinski are the usual starters for Suffolk and each have taken the rubber in 10 games. Newhall sports a 4.23 ErA over 41.1 innings, five starts with 16 strikeouts. Cynthia Rucinski, meanwhile, holds a 5.16 ERA in 40.1 innings of work in eight nods with a staff-best 28 Ks.  

VIKINGS VIEW
Salem State has won six games in a row to sit .500 (7-7) on the season.  

The trio of Samantha Gaona, Emily Henning and Paige Souza have recorded nine RBI apiece. Gaona sits atop the team in hits as well with 14. Perrotti is second on the squad with 13 hits and leads the way with 10 runs. On the base paths both Gaona and Perrotti have swiped four bags apiece. Souza's RBI have come behind 12 hits.  

Gracie Martineau and Emily Carter have taken on the bulk of the workload in the circle for the Vikings. Martineau boasts a 3.00 ERA in 30.1 innings over eight appearances, five starts, with 11 strikeouts. Carter has compiled a 3.74 ERA in 33.2 innings over seven games, six starts, with 17 punchouts. Alanis Tolendao has three starts under her belt as well and brings in a 5.56 ERA over 11.1 innings with seven Ks.

INSIDE THE SERIES

  • Suffolk has won three games in a row versus Salem State to lead the all-time series that dates back to April 6, 2015, 7-1. 
  • At home, Suffolk is unbeaten, 2-0, against the Vikings.

The Rams return to CCC action this weekend with twinbills at the University of New England and Curry. Suffolk heads to Biddeford, Maine, Saturday, April 6 before traveling to Milton, Massachusetts, Sunday, April 7. Both outings have a 12 p.m. game one first pitch.
