Softball’s Late Rally Falls Short in Game 1 With RWU, 9-4

BOSTON – Suffolk softball strung together a four-run sixth-inning, but it would not be enough to comeback and take down the Hawks as Roger Williams built an early 9-0 advantage to hand the Rams a 9-4 Commonwealth Coast Conference setback Sunday afternoon at Rotch Field.

THE BASICS
SCORE: Suffolk 4 | Roger Williams 9
RECORDS: Suffolk (1-11, 0-1 CCC) | Roger Williams (8-11, 1-0 CCC)

HOW IT HAPPENED
After two scoreless innings, Roger Williams had multiple runs over the next four innings and the Hawks twirler Raegen Germano had a no-no going through the fifth to give the visitors a 9-0 cushion as the game headed to the bottom of the sixth.

Caitlin Murphy's one-out, ground-rule double down the left field sparked Suffolk's scoring as the fifth-year outfielder came in behind Ira Boci's single through the left side. When Murphy pulled the defense home, Boci took second. During Ava Brandow's at bat, the Rams' catcher ran to third on a wild pitch and came in on an overthrow by the Hawks backstop. Back-to-back walks and a single from Ally Cifaratta chucked the backs in time for Ella Turnbull's two-run single to right center that brought the host within five, 9-4. The Rams rally would end there as Maddie Southers went down swinging for the final out of the frame.

Turnbull retired the side to keep the gap at five. With Rams runners on first and second, Roger Williams brought in Taylor Myers to throw. The reliever locked up the win for the Hawks as Becky Zellin lined grounded into a double play before Boci grounded out to third.
