Softball Clips Curry in Game One, 6-4

MILTON, Mass. – Suffolk softball snapped a five-game skid with a 6-4 victory over Curry in the opener of a Commonwealth Coast Conference (CCC) doubleheader at D. Forbes Will Field Saturday afternoon.

THE BASICS
SCORE: Suffolk 6 | Curry 4
RECORDS: Suffolk (15-10, 6-3 CCC) | Curry (5-23, 1-8 CCC)

HOW IT HAPPENED
Suffolk chased two after the first as the Colonels capitalized on two hits and small ball to grab a 2-0 lead.

The Rams closed the gap and then some two innings later. Rebecca Zellin led off with a double to left field. An out later, Caitlin Murphy pushed a two-bagger through the left side to break the blue-and-gold on the board. Murphy scored the game-tying run on Jolie Quintana's single down the left field line. The rookie took second on the play thanks to an error by the Colonels second baseman. Savannah Scripter connected for a single down the left field line to plate Quintana and give Suffolk the go-ahead, 3-2.

Curry locked things up in the home half of the inning, before restoring its advantage in the fourth.

Things stayed 4-3 in the Colonels favor until the top of the sixth when Suffolk jumped ahead again. Back-to-back base hits from Ally Cifaratta and Lily Gustafson opened the stanza. One out and two wild pitches later let the tying-run score. Ella Turnbull, who pinch hit for Zellin, sliced a single down the right field line to bring in the go-ahead tally.

The Colonels stranded two in the bottom of the sixth, which allowed the Rams to cling to the one-run edge. The blue-and-gold managed to add insurance in the seventh when Gustafson collected an RBI on a single down the left field line. The freshman scored Ava Brandow, who led off with a double to left field, to push the distance to 6-4.

Brandow threw a shutdown, three-up, three-down, inning to help Suffolk lock up the win.
