Softball’s Nightcap at UNE Halted Due to Weather

BIDDEFORD, Maine – Game two of Suffolk softball's CCC doubleheader at the University of New England was halted in the bottom of the fourth due to inclement weather.

At the time of the called game, the Rams led the Nor'Easters, 7-6, however, the hosts threatened as it had runners on first and third with no outs.

Prior to the heavy rain, Suffolk trailed early on as UNE stormed out to five-run lead in the home half of the first.

The Rams made up some ground second. A two-out rally came as Ira Boci's singled to right center to score Savannah Scripter and push Leina Belog to third. Both Scripter and Belog drew a base on balls to reach. Boci swiped second during Caitlin Murphy's at bat and good thing she did because Murphy knocked a base hit down the right field line to bring in Belog and Boci to trim the deficit down to two, 5-3.

The Nor'Easters got one run back in the bottom of the second, but the Rams responded in the third. Ashley Zulla doubled to left center to jump start a Suffolk hitting frenzy as Brooke Cloak followed with a single to single base and Scripter sent a base hit up the middle to bring the first run of the frame in. UNE made a change in the circle with Jordan Strum taking over for Alyssa Wilson. Strum retired the first hitter she faced, but was no match for Belog, who barreled a ball down the left field line and over the fence to give the Rams the go-ahead 7-6.

After her heroic hit Belog came in to shove and that she did. The sophomore put together a three-up, three-down inning to keep the one-run edge in the Rams' favor.

Despite having two base hits in the top of the fourth the Nor'Easters defense kept Suffolk from scoring to keep it a one-rung game. The weather got more intense and it made pitching difficult. UNE capitalized and had a first and third situation with no outs. That's when the umpires had enough and halted the action.

Whether or not Suffolk and UNE will conclude the contest is still to be determined.

In the meantime, Suffolk turns its attention to a home-and-home series with Roger Williams this weekend. The Rams will host the Hawks Saturday, April 24 at 12 p.m., before hitting the road the following day Sunday, April 25.
