UNE Blanks Softball in Game One, 8-0

BOSTON – Suffolk's softball's offense was limited, while the University of New England bats and pitching were hot to shutout the Rams, 8-0, in the first game of a CCC doubleheader Tuesday afternoon at East Boston Memorial Park.

THE BASICS
SCORE: Suffolk 0 | UNE 8
RECORDS: Suffolk (9-14, 5-6 CCC) | UNE (2-1, 1-0 CCC)

HOW IT HAPPENED
UNE grabbed a one-run lead in the second stanza. Nicole Cacciola singled up the middle to start things off and capitalized on a bobble by the Rams' first baseman Kelly Keane during Kylie Lavellee's at bat. Lavelle lobbed the ball to first, Keane misplayed it and then over threw to the bag trying to secure the out. With the commotion at first, Cacciola cruised to third. Three batters later, Cacciola scored on a fielder's choice during Taylor Depot's at bat to give the visitors a 1-0 edge.

Suffolk's limited to three-up, three-down in the third and fourth, respectively, before the Rams saw a chance in the fifth. The offensive opportunity came after the Nor'Easters put up three runs in the top of the inning to put the blue-and-gold in four-run hole.

Brooke Cloak got the inning going with a base hit to right field and Kelly Keane followed suit with a single of her own to center. Hailey Cockroft hit into a fielder's choice and the next two Rams went down as well to keep the hosts off the board.

After a scoreless sixth, UNE stretched the distance even further in the seventh. The visitors scored four runs on five hits to make it an 8-0 game.

With a lot of ground to make up, Suffolk still could not figure Jordan Strum out and the score stood in the Nor'Easters favor.

PITCHERES PICTURE

  • Constance Phelan slipped to 5-7 on the year after allowing five runs, four earned, on eight hits and two walks with five strikeouts.
  • Kennedy Reyes came in for relief. The twirler gave up three runs on four hits and fanned one hitter in 1.0 frame.
  • Strum put together a four-hit, two-punchout, complete-game shutout.

STATISTICALLY SPEAKING
