Gordon Grabs Game One Over Softball, 4-3

WENHAM, Mass. – Suffolk softball made a late push, but fell just short, to land on the wrong side of a 4-3 decision to Gordon Wednesday afternoon.

THE BASICS
SCORE: Suffolk 3 | Gordon 4
RECORDS: Suffolk (4-7, 2-1 CCC) | Gordon (1-2, 1-0 CCC)

HOW IT HAPPENED
Gordon got on the board in the home half of the first when a two-out Rams' error kept the inning alive for the hosts. Arianna Ramsaran sent a ball flying over the center field to make it 2-0 Fighting Scots.

In the bottom of the second Gordon doubled its advantage. Once again, the scoring came when there were two outs on the board. Emma Dubois wore a pitch to get things going, moved to second on a sac from Gabby Bergstrom and advanced to third when Gabby Hunt fouled out. Dubois came in on Laura Bieren's single through the left side, which came after Mara Little's walk. Little made her way home thanks to Lily Rivera's single up the middle and that made it 4-0 Fighting Scots.

That deficit hung around until the top of the fifth when the Rams rallied back. Walks from Hailey Cockroft and Rebecca Gonzalez set up Caitlin Murphy's RBI double to left center. An out later Ally Cifaratta collected an RBI on a routine ground out to second and a Fighting Scots mishap allowed Murphy to score to slice the gap to 4-3 after 4.5 frames.

Constance Phelan took care of business in the home half of the fifth. The RHP retired the side to keep the one-run game going.

In the sixth, Suffolk's offense saw one base runner on Gordon error, but the blue-and-gold could not capitalize around that and the 4-3 score stood still.

Phelan was relied on again to hold the hosts where they were at and the senior did that with her second straight 1-2-3 inning.

The same was said for the Rams in their next turn at the dish, however, and the comeback never came.

PITCHERS PICTURE

  • Phelan gave up four runs, two earned, on four hits and three walks with four strikeouts over 6.0 innings.
