Emmanuel Grabs Game 1 From Softball, 2-1

BOSTON – Suffolk softball had a chance to comeback, but Emmanuel caught a Ram on a delayed steal at third for the final out of a 2-1 Saints' opener Thursday night at Roberto Clemente Field.

THE BASICS
SCORE: Suffolk 1 | Emmanuel 2
RECORDS: Suffolk (1-6) | Emmanuel (1-2)

HOW IT HAPPENED
After Emmanuel put one run on the board in the bottom of the first behind Maegan Amsler's double to left center, the storyline turned to the circle. The pitchers limited base runners on either side to keep the game close.

Savannah Scripter sent a two-out shot out of Roberto Clemente Field in the top of the fourth to level the playing field at 1-all.

The Saints responded in the home half of the fifth to restore its one-run edge. Olivia Conti led off the inning with a single to center and landed on third thanks to Julyanne Pacheco's single to left field. With Emmanuel in scoring position, Reana Lacroix sacrificed herself to push the hosts ahead, 2-1.

Both sides were retired in the sixth to set up a come-from-behind seventh for Suffolk. A lead off error by the Saints shortstopped allowed Scripter to take first. Rachel Doan replaced her teammate on the first to run and moved over when Leina Belog wore the next pitch. Two outs later, Doan made a move during Ira Boci's game-on-the-line at bat. Megan Long threw a ball, outside, and Doan made her move to third. Avery Webb picked up on the steal attempt and threw down to the hot corner, making the play to end the game.
