Softball Falls to JWU in GNAC Opener

The Johnson & Wales University softball squad swept a pair of Great Northeast Athletic Conference contests against Suffolk in a double header at Pierce Field on Sunday afternoon. JWU posted a 2-1 win in the opener and completed the sweep with a 4-3 victory in the nightcap.

Suffolk took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first in the opener when the visiting Rams capitalized on a JWU miscue for the one run lead. Suffolk held the lead until the top of the fourth when a two-run double by junior Robyn Ziegler (Doylestown, Pa.) put JWU up 2-1. That would be all the scoring for the contest as JWU held on for the 2-1 victory. Junior Taylor Cwalinski (Jackson, N.J.) notched the win for the Wildcats, allowing one unearned run on six hits with nine strikeouts in the complete-game victory. Ziegler went 2-for-3 with a pair of RBI while sophomore Sarah Chasse (Salem, Mass.) and fellow sophomore Nicole Rosa (Wallingford, Conn.) each notched a pair of hits in the loss for Suffolk.

In the nightcap, JWU took the early 2-0 lead with a pair of unearned runs in the top of the first inning. The Wildcats added one in the third and a sacrifice fly by junior Tayla Gardner (Orangeburg, N.Y.) scored freshman Cynthia Proby (Bremerton, Wash.) made the score 4-0. Suffolk chipped away at the lead in the bottom of the seventh when they pushed across three unearned runs, but it wasn't enough as the visiting Rams left runners on second and third to give JWU the 4-3 victory. Chasse went 2-for-4 with run scored in the loss for Suffolk. Freshman Kristen Solari (Old Bridge, N.J.) was 2-for-4 with a run scored for JWU while Gardner picked up the complete-game victory, giving up three unearned runs on six hits with three strikeouts in seven innings of work.

With the pair of wins Johnson & Wales improves to 4-10 on the season and 2-4 in the GNAC while Suffolk falls to 1-9 overall and 0-2 in league play. The Wildcats will return to action on Wednesday, March 27th when they travel to Mitchell for a non-conference double header at 3:30 p.m.
