Rams, Blue Jays Split GNAC Softball Twinbill

The Suffolk University Rams and St. Joseph College Blue Jays split a Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) softball double header on Saturday afternoon.

The Blue Jays took game one, 3-2 on a seventh inning two-run homer by sophomore Ashley Gall (Stafford Springs, Conn.), while Suffolk took game two with a 9-1 victory.

In game one senior Kristina Torres (Groton, Conn.) picked up her fifth win of the season on the mound only allowing one earned run in seven innings of work while fanning seven hitters as the Blue Jays picked up their 10th victory of the year.

Sophomore Shauna Sullivan (Rocky Hill, Conn.) drove in the game's first run in the top half of the first inning with a bases loaded infield single to plate the opening score of the game.

Suffolk would answer in their first at bat as sophomore Erin McAndrews (Marblehead, Mass.) drove in freshman Sarah Chasse (Salem, Mass.) with a triple.

Both teams would trade zeroes until the seventh inning despite having plenty of opportunities. A combined 19 runners were left on base in the contest, until Gall's homer gave the Blue Jays a 3-1 edge. Junior Stephanie Valerio (Wolcott, Conn.) started the inning with a lead off triple.

In game two the Rams got their offense going early as they scored three runs in the first inning, and then added four more in the second.

Senior Karina Bolster (Carlisle, Pa.) drove home the first run of the game with a single to left, before freshman Alicia Gonnella (Bridgewater, N.J.) plated a pair of runs with a two-out single.

Gonnella drove in two more runs in the second inning with another single, and the Rams took advantage of some patience at the plate as McAndrews drew a bases loaded walk earlier in the frame.

On the mound, Chasse picked up her fifth win of the year as she struck out six hitters in six innings of work and she also helped her cause with an RBI double down the left field line in the sixth inning.

Both teams will be in GNAC action on Sunday afternoon. St. Joseph will travel to Providence, RI to take on the Johnson & Wales Wildcats in a double header at noon. Suffolk will host St. Joseph's College with a double header at Popoulo Field beginning at noon.
