CCC Champions: Men's Outdoor Track & Field Wins Inaugural League Title

WENHAM, Mass. - Suffolk made history on Saturday, winning the inaugural Commonwealth Coast Conference (CCC) Men's Track and Field Championship with a team score of 162 at the Brigham Athletic Complex. The Rams topped the five-team field, outscoring its closest opponent by nearly 40 points.

Suffolk used eight individual champions to lock up the first-ever CCC crown.  

Matyas Csiki-Fejer won three titles on his own. The senior paced the field in the 1500 with a time of 3:59.92, while clocking in at 1:58.37 in the 800. The Manchester, Missouri native also won the 5k race, posting a time of 15:05.19.  

Brady Sorensen was also a triple-gold winner on Saturday, winning the 100, 200 and long jump. On the track the sophomore posted regional-qualifying times of 11.04 and 22.56 in the 100 and 200, respectively. Jumping wise, he leaped 6.71-meters in the long jump.   

Carter Nevulis locked up first in the 110 hurdles and Michael Balestra topped the hammer throw field. Nevulis finished with a time of 15.70 and Balestra heaved a throw of 54.28.  

In addition to the first-place performers, Suffolk saw seven additional podium performers with four runner-ups and a trio of third-place showings.  

Nevulis notched third in the triple jump behind three hops of 12.78 meters.  

Selvin BackertTim Barry and Thomas Novy all joined Csiki-Fejer on the podium in the 800, 1500, and 5k respectively. Backert made two laps around the track in 1:59.46, good for third, while Barry finished behind Csiki-Fejer in second the 1500 with a time of 4:03.63. Novy used a regional-qualifying time of 15:22.54 to seal up second in the 5000.

Edward Abouzeid threw his way to second in the javelin with a 45.37-meter toss.  

Both of Suffolk's relay squads garnered a place on the podium. The 4x400 made up of Cole Bolduc, Backert, Joshua Durand and Robert Solari combined for a time of 3:27.24 to secure second. Solari, Jonathan GarulaTurner Mitchell and Sorensen teamed up for third in the 4x100 with a time of 43.95.  

Bolduc narrowly missed the podium in the 400. He finished one lap around the track in 50.84 to punch his ticket to regionals and land fourth in the event Saturday. 

Each of the medalist at Saturday's championship were named to the all-conference teams with the gold medalist earning first-team all-conference honors, silver medalist securing spots on the second-team and bronze medalist making up the third team.  

Additionally, the five CCC men's head coaches will vote on major postseason awards next week. Following the voting period, the conference will recognize a Track Athlete of the Year, Track Rookie of the Year, Field Performer of the Year, Field Rookie of the Year and a CCC Scholar-Athlete. Coaches will also be voting on winners for Coach of the Year and Team Sportsmanship.  

Suffolk's schedule continues next weekend, May 6-7, at the Division III East Regional Championships at Lee Track in Williamstown, Massachusetts.
