Outdoor Track & Field Starts Season at Gordon Invite


BOSTON – Suffolk's men's and women's outdoor track & field will lift the lid on its 2021 slate at the Gordon Invite this weekend. The event is set for 10 a.m. starts at the Brigham Athletic Complex on the Fighting Scots' campus.

RAPID REWIND
Suffolk has had just two outdoor track & field seasons, 2018 and 2019, respectively, as the 2020 campaign was cancelled due to the COVID-19 pandemic. The Rams will compete for the first time on the outdoor track as a unit since the 2019 NCAA Division III New England Championships May 4, 2019.

SCHEDULE SYNOPSIS
Suffolk has four events on tap in 2021. The men and women will travel to the same meets this season with the final invite, Saturday, May 2 at Roger Williams split between the CCC Championships for the women and the CCC Invite for the men. 

RAMS ROOKIES [ MEN ]
Over the off season, Will Feldman tracked down 15 newcomers to add depth to the Suffolk men's track & field roster.

RAM ROOKIES [ WOMEN ]A baker's dozen new Rams will appear for Suffolk women's indoor and outdoor track & field this season. The 13 additions are all members of Suffolk's Class of 2024.

RAMS RINGLEADERS [ MEN ]
After capturing the inaugural indoor GNAC Championship and having its spring season canceled, head coach Will Feldman has announced that the quartet of juniors in Michael BalestraMatyas Csiki-FejerRobert Solari and Hunter Toyoda will return to their roles as captains of the Suffolk men's indoor and outdoor track & field teams.

RAMS RINGLEADERS [ WOMEN ]
Suffolk women's track & field will be under the leadership of Olivia ChilcottNatalie Fay and Allison Rodrigues as the threesome were named tri-captains, head coach Will Feldman announced.

COACH'S CORNER
Will Feldman returns for his fourth year at the helm of the Suffolk cross country and track & field programs.

Feldman has brought in helpful hands to aid in coaching in Josh Brodin, Tim Morse (throwers) and Zeke Smith (distance). 

THE FIELD
Joining Suffolk in Wenham, Massachusetts Saturday are the men and women of Gordon, Wentworth and the University of New England with Endicott's women's team competing as well.

RAMS TO KEEP AN EYE ON

  • Matyas Csiki-Fejer will be racing the 1500, and then will be pacing Hunter Toyoda and Conor Garrity in the 5K later in the meet. The junior and freshman will look to break the 16-minute barrier.
  • Jacob Dubin is a Rams' rookie to keep an eye on as he makes his collegiate debut, and looks to become a key contributor.
  • In the field, Michael Balestra will throw hammer for the first time since earning All-New England honors back in 2019.
  • Allison Rodrigues has a full schedule as the junior captain will compete in the shot put, hammer, disc and javelin.
  • Freshman Sydney Fogg will look to establish herself as one of the top distance runners in the CCC when she races the 1500.
  • Leah Doucot is another first-year to keep tabs on as she makes her collegiate debut in the hammer throw.

NATIONAL NOTES
Both Michael Balestra and Matyas Csiki-Fejer will be contending for spots at NCAAs this season. The top 17 athletes in each event at the end of the season will earn the right to compete in Greensboro, North Carolina at the end of May. On the women's side, Allison Rodrigues and Sydney Fogg will be chasing spots at nationals.

During the longer than usual off-season, track & field was well represented on Suffolk Sounds, the official podcast of Suffolk Athletics, as head coach Will Feldman joined the show as a guest, as well as junior captains Matyas Csiki-Fejer and  Allison Rodrigues
