Men’s Tennis Drops Non-Conference Finale at RIC, 8-1

PROVIDENCE, R.I. – Suffolk men's tennis fell in its non-league closer to Rhode Island College, 8-1, Thursday afternoon at the RIC Tennis Center.

HOW IT HAPPENED
Rhode Island won the three doubles matches to take a 3-0 lead into singles paly where the Anchormen rolled to five straight points, with wins on courts four, six, one, three and two in that order, for an 8-0 advantage.  

With the match already wrapped up in the host favor, Juan Velasquez put the blue-and-gold on the board with a triumph from the fifth spot. The sophomore downed Jack Cadden, 1-6, 6-2, 10-4, for the final 8-1 margin.

2 – Josh Brien (RIC) defeated Dylan Katz (Suffolk), 6-7 (7-8), 6-1, 10-7
3 – Noah Morin (RIC) defeated Diego Hernandez-Pons (Suffolk), 6-1, 7-6 (7-4) 
4 – Elijah Gouin (RIC) defeated Matthew Gallego (Suffolk), 6-0, 6-1

NOTEWORTHY

  • Suffolk renewed a rivalry with RIC, meeting the Anchormen for the first time since April 25, 2019. 
  • Velasquez moved to 3-5 on the season in singles play. 
  • Velasquez secured his first single point from the fifth point in his collegiate career.
