Roger Williams Nets Overtime PK to Take Down Men’s Soccer, 1-0, in Season Finale

BRISTOL, R.I. – Suffolk men's soccer took Roger Williams to overtime after a scoreless regulation, however, a penalty kick just over a minute into the extra session paid off for the Hawks in a victorious way as the host downed the Rams, 1-0, Tuesday at Bayside Field.

HOW IT HAPPENED
Both teams battled throughout a Nor'Easters over the 90 minutes of regulation and neither managed to break onto the scoreboard.  

Roger Williams controlled much of the action, however, Rams' keeper senior Alfredo Serrano Figueroa stepped up to the challenge and turned aside all six shots he faced to keep the Hawks off the board. On the other end of the pitch, Jack Avellar stopped the trio of blue-and-gold shots on target as well to keep Suffolk scoreless. 

Just 1:34 into the extra session Declan Mee was handed out a yellow card inside the box, which set up a penalty kick for Roger Williams. Javi Beltran converted the one-on-one with Serrano Figuero to lift his team to victory. 

KEEPING UP WITH THE KEEPERS

  • Serrano Figuero finished with six saves. 
  • Avellar secured three stops in the victory.  

STATISTICALLY SPEAKING

  • Roger Williams outshot Suffolk, 20-12. 
  • The Hawks held a 7-3 shots on goal advantage. 
  • The hosts had the upper hand in corners as well, 9-2. 
  • Brady Sorensen and Miguel Varela were responsible for eight of the Rams' shots with the sophomore and freshman shooting four apiece. The latter put one attempt on net. 

NOTEWORTHY

  • Suffolk and Roger Williams met for the second time overall, first since 1990. 
  • The Rams and Hawks went into overtime for the first time in the all-time series. 
  • Both games between Suffolk and RWU have ended in a shutout. 
  • Suffolk needed extra time to determine a winner for the fourth time this season. 
  • The Rams are 1-2-1 in overtime this season and in the Bill Maddock era. 
  • Serrano Figuero had a career-high six stops in net.

Suffolk awaits the official seeding of the 2022 CCC Tournament. First round action is set to begin this Thursday, Oct. 28 between the seventh and eighth seed with the quarterfinals on tap for Saturday, Oct. 30 at the highest seeds.
