Wentworth Gets Past Men’s Soccer, 2-1

EAST BOSTON – Brady Sorensen's game-tying goal would not be enough to fuel a Suffolk men's soccer comeback as Wentworth reclaimed the advantage 50 seconds after the Rams' sophomore leveled the playing field to take a 2-1 lead it even relinquished Wednesday night at James A. Sartori Stadium at East Boston Memorial Park

THE BASICS
SCORE: Suffolk 1 | Wentworth 2
RECORDS: Suffolk (7-7-1, 3-4-0 CCC) | Wentworth (8-7-0, 3-3-0 CCC)

HOW IT HAPPENED
Erik Treble converted John Dauphin's corner kick into a goal off a header 10:51 into the action to give Wentworth a lead it would hold onto at the half.

The Rams stormed out of the locker room persistent to level the playing field. Erik Van Even saw the first opportunity with a wide-open chance less than five minutes out of the break, but the freshman got too excited and sent the ball through the football uprights.

Two minutes later, Nigel Leo looked to equalize matters, but his attempt pinged off the crossbar. John Heeran picked up Leo's rebound and zipped a shot on target, but like Van Evan's it was too high to matter and zero stayed on Suffolk's side of the scoreboard.

The pressure ended up paying off for the blue-and-gold as Sorensen won a scramble right in front of the Leopards net and put the ball way to even the score at one apiece at the 53:50-minute mark. Edward Abouzeid helped the game-tying goal.

Things did not stay even for long as the Leopards responded 50 seconds later. Wentworth's goal was identical to its first; a Dauphin corner put away by Treble's header. The senior duo gave the visitors regained the lead for the visitors in the 55th minute.

Suffolk found itself playing catchup once again. Wentworth had other things in mind though and limited the Rams to just a pair of shots on target. The first came off Miguel Varela's boot in the 83rd minute. The freshman's shot was punched out by Noah Lawless. WIT's keeper put on the hero cape again a minute later as he turned aside Van Even's strike.

The Rams saw a spark one last time with a corner kick with just under three minutes remaining. Leo lobbed the rock right in front of the Leopards net, but the kick did not result in anything and the Leopards remained in front for good.

KEEPING UP WITH THE KEEPERS

  • Lawless registered a four-stop effort in his first victory in net.
